Mini M? [MERGED] AKA X-Vario

M stands for Marketing (puff).

I doubt it will be a FF fixed lens camera, as that would encroach on X2 sales, and it won't be some kind of budget M rangefinder either.

It will be 1.5 to 2 times the price of the X2 body only, so there will be no overlap

Isn't viral marketing the bomb? Release virus, stand back and watch it replicate and spread by itself. Consider yourself infected and contagious.

(Still think it is going to be a crop sensor RF that will fit in your pocket.)

There is already a fix lens camera wth a crop sensor: X2.

The new "mini" could only be a fix lens camera with FF sensor... (Like the RX1) I guess..

Which would have the impossible task of going head to head with the RX1, as it is difficult to improve on the quality and Leica never could compete on the price. With Canon moving in...

Sure this will be an interchangeable lens camera

No one would get excited about another fixed lens camera, APS-S or FF. There are enough in the market already.

If the box is to scale, it looks to small to hold a camera with a rangefinder. My guess would be an X2 type of camera that takes interchangable lenses - either AF or M. - and has a clip on EVF.

that would crash and burn.

why buy that over a Nex-6 or X-E1 ?

even Zeiss lenses are coming to these platforms now

IMHO it has to have at least 1.3 crop. A RF mechanism would be wunderbar as well

For the same reason some people buy an X2 and not a cheaper make?

Anyhow, the only thing we can guarantee is that it will have a red dot on front. Unless it's black of course.

I keep going back to the NEX vs. M argument, and I just don't see it. They are very, very different cameras targeting different audiences. A mere glance at the camera UI tells you the intended audience. While Zeiss is producing excellent AF lenses for this system, I think there is a threshold (in price) beyond which no typical NEX user would ever consider a Zeiss lens. Right now, this threshold seems to be around $1k. Fuji also understands this, and it bears out through their body and lens build and pricing.

The only clear danger to Leica's rangefinder market (in my mind) is Fuji with the successor to the X-Pro.

I fully appreciate your point, but of course we are guessing about the spec of this pending model. I don't think it will be a true rangefinder, as it may potentially upset sales at the high end of their market (M240 etc). That said it has to offer a significant advantage over the X2 to make it worth while, although interchangable lenses may well take care of that . There seems to be quite a few Leica lens owners using the brilliant Leica glass of other bodies, so maybe it will have a broad appeal and convince them to buy into Leica from the other side . In any event I'm sure it will create a queue of its own, Leica has the enviable position of creating order backlogs through clever marketing and of course producing beautiful quality products . I'm looking forward to them opening the box .

On the Leica Camera AG Facebook page.

I think the "Nano" refers to the Nano sim card used in iPhone 5 and iPad Mini (Nano comes from Greek ‘dwarf’).

wow that is unbelievably dim! Doesn't even make any sense! lol

I don't mean to pick on you by saying this and I offer it up for consideration:

Nobody wanted an apple phone, there were enough phones on the market already. Then came iPhone.

What if the fixed lens wasn't the defining feature? Some others have mentioned that perhaps the gap between the x2 and the M isn't the lens changing but the focus/compose method.

Isn't viral marketing the bomb? Release virus, stand back and watch it replicate and spread by itself. Consider yourself infected and contagious.

Rick I like your idea. I think the focusing and composing method is what's great about the M and the lens changing is secondary to me. A great way to make a rangefinder package pocketable is to integrate the lens in order to decrease the back-focus distance, use a leica central shutter, and skip the bayonet and mount volume.

Another way to decrease size and perhaps cost is to remember that a range finder is not necessarily a mechanically-coupled optical-mechanical rangefinder and could take advantage of superimposing parallax images via electronic means and consider the possibilities there.

Whatever. I'm going to cancel my M order tonight. I can't see me getting one until next year at least. I'd happily keep my M9 until it falls to bits and pick up a smaller backup with better ISO for lower price. No one has mentioned ISO. We know its going to be better in low light. Maybe as good as the M. Lets just prey it can take M lenses!

I truly love Leica, but even as a lifelong fan, I must say that digital Leicas always under-deliver; they are always a few steps behind in technological terms.

Magenta issues on the M8, ISO performance on the M9, poor focus peaking and EVF quality on the M, sloppy AF on the X1/X2 -- every digital model has shown a real lack of attention to key digital issues (the aesthetics on the other hand are unquestionable!)

So I have very low expectations for the Mini M. They're not going to be able to compete with Fuji and Sony in terms of technical creativity. This won't be an RX1 killer or even an X Pro 1 killer. Imagine the most conservative step forward. Either an X2 type with a zoom but no viewfinder OR a Digilux or CL type fixed lens with a viewfinder. Neither will have a cutting edge sensor, will almost certainly cost upwards of $4,000, and won't be available for ages.

All this leads me to say: I don't understand the Leica madness for opening stores everywhere on earth when most people can't afford or don't want their signature products. And those that do want them, can't find them!

This isn't a rant! I love Leica, including the M9, which I own. I love the stores too (even though they don't make business sense)! And I'm excited to see a Mini M, but I just don't see how Leica can keep doing well in the long run when they don't do enough technically with the M line.

:confused:You mean like the non-sloppy AF on the RX1? That is a given for compacts, unfortunately. And a CL with a fixed lens? That was a camera with M lens compatability....

An X3 with a zoom like the Digilux2? That would be sensational! Arguably the best small-format zoom ever built....

This "given" is one challenge they could accept to differentiate a good digital camera from their previous offerings.
