Bill W Posted May 23, 2013 Share #1 Â Posted May 23, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I previously had a 24 Elmarit f2.8 that I bought in 2009 but sold it last year. Now I am interested in the 24 Elmar f3.8 to replace it. I do not need it but just have the opportunity. How have others felt about this version. I like the fact that it has the 46mm filter size which matches several others I use.
Advertisement Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Hi Bill W, Take a look here 24 Thoughts. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Ecar Posted May 23, 2013 Share #2 Â Posted May 23, 2013 Not my most used lens, but smaller, lighter and possibly a tad sharper than the Elmarit ASPH. I kept the latter as well, as I like its rendering and occasionally need the extra speed. The 24/3.8 shines for street work when you have decent light and don't want the extreme perspective of a 21 (it's amazing the difference those 3mm make...) or wider. I rarely use filters, but I realize it can be an important consideration.
Bill W Posted May 23, 2013 Author Share #3 Â Posted May 23, 2013 Thanks, I like that it is smaller. It certainly would not take up much bag space. I can get a used one very reasonably. The 24 is not as popular as the 21 from what I have seen.
Carduelis Posted May 23, 2013 Share #4 Â Posted May 23, 2013 Bill, if you have a look at page 10 of this M lens section, I started a thread on 29/10/12 praising the 24 mm Elmar. You may find the comments useful.
NZDavid Posted May 24, 2013 Share #5  Posted May 24, 2013 Why did you sell the 2.8/24? A beautiful lens and one of my most used. The focal length is usefully wide but not as much as a 21 (84º FOV compared with 92º). I wonder if a 28 (76º FOV) might work better for you?
Photoskeptic Posted May 24, 2013 Share #6 Â Posted May 24, 2013 Bill, the 24 Elmar-M is a surprise of a lens. Small, light and very, very sharp. Also love the 12-pointed sun rays when shot into the light. It has a bit of pin-cushion distortion easily handled in ACR. I actually bought it for the Monochrom (in whatever year it decides to arrive) but am enjoying it on the 8.2.
IWC Doppel Posted May 24, 2013 Share #7 Â Posted May 24, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I think the 24 Elmarit-M ASPH is a superb lens, with an ability to balance wide with a real life perspective plus it is stunning at capturing image depth and recreating three dimensionality of scenes in my humble opinion. Â Why did you sell ?
cbretteville Posted May 24, 2013 Share #8 Â Posted May 24, 2013 It is a superb lens. C

The focal length is usefully wide but not as much as a 21 (84º FOV compared with 92º). I wonder if a 28 (76º FOV) might work better for you? As things go, it was my least used lens and I needed funds so it went. As they say, never sell and M lens. I did get for it what I paid for it. I have a 28 already, just thinking about the 24 f3.
Bill W Posted May 25, 2013 Author Share #10 Â Posted May 25, 2013 Bill, if you have a look at page 10 of this M lens section, I started a thread on 29/10/12 praising the 24 mm Elmar. You may find the comments useful. I will find that thread and read it today since we seem to be in our rainy season this weekend. Not complaining since we REALLY need the rain. Bill W Posted May 25, 2013 Author Share #11 Â Posted May 25, 2013 I will find that thread and read it today since we seem to be in our rainy season this weekend. Not complaining since we REALLY need the rain. Read the thread and ordered the lens. It is a demo for a great price. Now do I really need an external finder? I did not have one before so I will go without.
gvaliquette Posted May 27, 2013 Share #12 Â Posted May 27, 2013 Great decision, you will love this lens. As for the viewfinder, if you shoot digital, you can get by without one, just a lot of chimping. For film, you do need one. Â Guy
Bill W Posted May 31, 2013 Author Share #13 Â Posted May 31, 2013 Received my 24 yesterday. Even though it was used, it appears brand new and has a 1 year warranty. I took a couple of test shots to check focusing and that is spot on. For the price it was a great deal.
Carduelis Posted June 1, 2013 Share #14 Â Posted June 1, 2013 I think you will be happy with the lens Bill. It seems to be very sharp at most apertures with good distortion control, and the flattish nature of its MTF curves resembles those of the new 50 mm APO Summicron lens. Bill W Posted June 6, 2013 Author Share #16 Â Posted June 6, 2013 Bill, where did you bought, if I may ask? congrats with the buy. I see 24 elmar as my single wide angle lens I bought it from Popflash in California. I have purchased several lens from them. They are on ebay as well as the web. Tony and Alex are great guys to deal with. It was used but you cannot tell by looking at it since it was packaged like it came from Leica. I am very pleased with if so far.
