Advertisement Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 Hi andybarton, Take a look here Another theft from a dealer to report. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Jeff S Posted May 16, 2013 Share #2 Posted May 16, 2013 No laughing matter, but... ... interesting that the thief was conscientious enough to get a protective filter, and practical enough not to wait until the new M or APO 50 arrived. Of course I hope the gear the thief are found quickly. Jeff
Ecar Posted May 16, 2013 Share #3 Posted May 16, 2013 Not the random sweep-all theft. Seems like the thief knew exectly what he wanted...
JeTexas Posted May 16, 2013 Share #4 Posted May 16, 2013 (edited) Unless it was a display model with the M-E, the Summicron and the filter all put together, and he just grabbed that. Or she, might have been a female burglar ... Edited May 16, 2013 by JeTexas I was being sexist with my assumptions regarding burglary.
macjonny1 Posted May 16, 2013 Share #5 Posted May 16, 2013 Too bad the filter doesn't have a SN# it's going to make it harder to track down
250swb Posted May 16, 2013 Share #6 Posted May 16, 2013 This is typical of what happens when Leica Mayfair doesn't have anything left in stock, even thieves have to trawl go around the dealers. Steve
rramesh Posted May 17, 2013 Share #7 Posted May 17, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I see a number of such notices about stolen equipment. Is there a process with Leica or this forum to check if a second hand item is on a stolen list?
jrp Posted May 17, 2013 Share #8 Posted May 17, 2013 Or she, might have been a female burglar ... No, it looks like someone did a runner. CCTV pics of the culprit are on the red dot web site.
andybarton Posted May 17, 2013 Author Share #9 Posted May 17, 2013 Is there a process with Leica or this forum to check if a second hand item is on a stolen list? No, but many people report stolen items to Leica and if you are buying something that appears to be a bargain (or even not), Customer Services will advise whether they have been informed that a particular serial number is "hot". The problem can be that sometimes stolen goods are recovered and not everyone would inform Leica that the item has returned, leaving a flag on the item unnecessarily. semi-ambivalent Posted May 17, 2013 Share #10 Posted May 17, 2013 No, it looks like someone did a runner. CCTV pics of the culprit are on the red dot web site. The alleged thief looks old enough to be a pensioner. Perhaps a crime of 'economic necessity'. Maybe a testimony to over-whelming leica-desire. That would be really interesting; to take such risks for a mass produced object. Isn't that what Advertising tries to do-create that desire for something that is perhaps out of reach, or against one's best long-term interests? That would be worth an update. Or it was just a grab-'n-dash and off to the fence, in which case it's page four news. In any case, grateful no one was hurt, hopes for the recovery of the goods. As for the gentleman in the video, next time maybe wear a black turtleneck; it always worked for David Niven. s-a
brill64 Posted May 17, 2013 Share #11 Posted May 17, 2013 Bloody cheeky sod..!! Note to self : please be reminded to be especially attentive of opportunist snatch & grab thieves when wandering around central London with a Leica dangling around your neck. glug Posted May 17, 2013 Share #12 Posted May 17, 2013 What do you think a demonstration M-E and Cron 50 would sell for on ebay ?

viramati Posted May 17, 2013 Share #14 Posted May 17, 2013 I feel sorry for Ivor and hope the guy gets caught. Would appear to be somewhat stupid to have stolen the item in this way when they have got very clear pictures of him
Bill Allsopp Posted May 17, 2013 Share #15 Posted May 17, 2013 Perhaps camera shops will, or indeed need, to become like upmarket jewelers where you press a buzzer to get in and a shop assistant has to open the door to let you out?

glug Posted May 17, 2013 Share #17 Posted May 17, 2013 I felt RG Lewis were taking a risk when they let me walk around with an M. I could easily have made off with it. Nice guys, hope they don't get caught out. I know jewellers and mobile phone shops in my town are often caught out by runners for a few hundred pounds worth let alone £5k. farnz Posted May 19, 2013 Share #18 Posted May 19, 2013 Very sorry to hear about this but very glad that no one was injured and hopefully the stolen goods were covered by insurance. Does anyone know how the scum entered the shop? (I assume that it wasn't during trading hours.) Pete.

Some of them have been like that for some time. As mentioned, Leica Mayfair has always used a buzzer as does (or at least did; haven't been for years) Richard Caplan. I thought Red Dot also had a buzzer entry system?
