MarkP Posted May 12, 2013 Share #2 Posted May 12, 2013 Never seen anything like it but it probably gives very unique Bokeh
adan Posted May 12, 2013 Share #3 Posted May 12, 2013 1) Oh, I don't know.....the original R 21 Super-Angulon f/4 worked with just 4 blades (although you could - just barely - see it in the "bokeh," sometimes.) 2) Jeez, jaap - have you been using that lens hood to hammer nails? 3) More seriously, I have seen this kind of aperture collapse before, but usually in medium-format lenses. Probably a risk with bridging any larger than normal aperture diameter.
peterbengtson Posted May 12, 2013 Share #4 Posted May 12, 2013 I had a similar iris failure in a fat 90 Tele-Elmar years ago. I got badly knocked and some of the blades came loose. Repaired and still working fine 25+ years later.
IWC Doppel Posted May 12, 2013 Share #5 Posted May 12, 2013 Looks like that hood lost a fight with a cheese grater
jaapv Posted May 12, 2013 Author Share #6 Posted May 12, 2013 I'm a user, not a hoarder . The anodizing on the hood is indeed not too resistant, i've got twenty year old lenses that are hardly marked. Fortunately the lens itself is a lot better, with only light markings. I'll have a go at the hood with Aluminum Black one of these days, that should make quit a difference.
algrove Posted May 12, 2013 Share #7 Posted May 12, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Salads need oil and vinegar with a pinch of salt and pepper. Looks like you have abused the salad recipe.
jaapv Posted May 13, 2013 Author Share #8 Posted May 13, 2013 I don't like oil on aperture blade salad
Ecar Posted May 13, 2013 Share #9 Posted May 13, 2013 Ouch... Yes, vegetable growth can be somewhat anarchic in early spring.

MarkP Posted May 15, 2013 Share #11 Posted May 15, 2013 Very disappointing. How old is the lens?
jaapv Posted May 15, 2013 Author Share #12 Posted May 15, 2013 2008, if memory serves. In Solms right now. Should take about two weeks, I hope. 496,65 Euro....
Paul J Posted May 15, 2013 Share #13 Posted May 15, 2013 496,65 Euro.... Indeed. Ouch. Sorry to hear Jaap. 2008 isn't even so long ago - That's disconcerting.
Paul J Posted May 15, 2013 Share #14 Posted May 15, 2013 Out of interest, do you know at all how many shots you've taken with this lens? Thanks,
jaapv Posted May 15, 2013 Author Share #15 Posted May 15, 2013 No idea, but I use it regularly and it lives in my daily camerabag.

Jeff S Posted May 15, 2013 Share #17 Posted May 15, 2013 2008, if memory serves. I joined the forum in March of 2009, and IIRC, I think you bought this lens sometime soon after, having considered the 21 versus 24 Summilux. I remember a nice close-up photo of a pony at some point early on. I remember thinking about a wider lens for me at that point, since I was moving from film Ms to the cropped M8.2, and your posts were helpful, although I decided to stick with the 28 Summicron asph as my widest. jaapv Posted May 15, 2013 Author Share #18 Posted May 15, 2013 Idon't recall the exact year but it was one of the very first that Leica delivered.
Jeff S Posted May 15, 2013 Share #19 Posted May 15, 2013 Well, even though the lens is listed as beginning in 2008, it could have taken a long time for Leica to actually deliver it, consistent with current trends. And as I recall, this was a special lens for Leica, as a really fast 24 (as the 50 APO is special in other respects now), that required some time to get ready for distribution. Anyway, just trying to help, as best as I remember, which would be in 2009. Jeff
jaapv Posted May 15, 2013 Author Share #20 Posted May 15, 2013 I'm sure you are right; the copyright mark on the image you refer to is indeed 2009
