Is there a big difference, if any, if the lens is made in Germany or Canada? Or does this vary between different lenses which is the best? Anything I should think about when buying lenses from any of the countries on forehand? Is the second hand market lenses more expensive from any of the countries?

none at all. as far as i've read, Leica were VERY meticulous about quality control standards and production standards when their products were being made in Canada....as were the Canadian employees. Some really great products came out of Leica in those years!

However, human nature being what it is, prices are usually higher for a German lens than for a Canadian one - which means the smart user will go for the Canadian one.

Canadian bodies and lenses were somewhat considered of lesser quality when i bought mine and in fact my M4-2 has got shutter problems, my 35/2 v4 and "thin" 90/2.8 had loosening optical cells and the latter's engravings were sloppily painted over. They still work perfectly 30 years later though.

It can happen for "rarity" reasons, which do count in collectors' market : for example, Canadian Summarits 50 are much rarer than Germany, Wetzlar Elmarit 28 are rarer than Canadian and so on...

Hi,

Search for Dr. Walter Mandler and read about Leica and Canada. I even understand that some "made in Germany" cameras and lenses were actually made in Canada; according to a serial number list, my M3 and my 50 Summicron were made in Canada. My 1962 35 Summicron (with googles) says "Canada" and it is kind of neat to show off an M9 with a made in Canada lens! Oh, and my Canadian 135 Elmarit works pretty well too.

My 35 is Canadian, and the 90 I sold (at a profit) was Canadian as well. Both were superb in every respect. Others may have different experiences, but I would pay less and buy Canadian 10 times out of 10 for lenses.

I have always been happy with Canadian made Leica products, and indeed it would have been a catastrophic marketing strategy if there had been a difference in quality. My biggest 'Leica regret' is in selling a Canadian made 35mm Summilux and M4-P, both superb and it was a mad moment of brain fade.
