Reading the more recent threads it seems that the initial euphoria surrounding the launch and availability of the new M seems to have gone away leaving in its wake some amount of bewilderment, confusion and doubt.

  • Some folks have returned them or sold them after glowing reviews
  • Others are less than happy with issues pertaining to AWB, software, button placements/ use, live view, video etc.
  • I am not even seeing more great images coming from the M, either on the Leica website or in forums like LUF.

Leica has also been rather silent on firmware and fixes, if any, besides a supply chain moving like molasses.

For a camera which is to launch Leica into a new direction and define the platform of the future, I think something is missing.

Thoughts?

There is a lot of nitpicking going on over the color and it discourages some. With judicious use of levels, I can make the files look like M9.

The lack of a USB port is more important to me than a small color cast in the shadows. One I can fix, the other not.

Everyone complained about noise, not me, and wanted live view. CCD was one the way out. CMOS is trade off.

Ok so the camera is not perfect. Neither are Nikons or Canons. Give me a break.

Nothing new. Eventually people will actually be able to get hold of the product; hard to post pics before then. Then the inevitable fixes will come. Then there will be lots more chatter about other desired fixes/features. Then more firmware updates will come. Then Leica will tease with some cosmetic enhancements, but that will take longer yet. Eventually there will be so much activity that debates will ensue about creating separate forum sections. Carrying longer and heavier lenses will prompt even more bag threads. And so on.

Search older threads if you'd like to read the actual movie script. The plot, and the ending, haven't varied much.

You couldn't pry the M out of my hands if you tried.

Same here. I have had it for almost a month and love it. I am coming from an R8/DMR and the files are better with the M. A little more work than the DMR, but clearly better. The camera also is a joy to use.

The only frustration, other than its imminent return to Leica for the lug issue, is the lack on an R to M adapter so I can use all that awesome R glass I have acquired over the years.

There are plenty out there. I bought one for under $40 on Amazon and it works great.

BTW- to the original poster, join the Facebook group and you will see plenty of photos.

here it is:

Amazon.com: Fotodiox 10LRLM Lens Mount Adapter, Leica R Lens to Leica M Adapter Fits Leica M-Monochrome, M8.2, M9, M9-P, M10 and Ricoh GXR Mount: Camera & Photo

I did not code it, but im only using the 100mm APO Macro right now. I traded all my other R lenses for a Noctilux :)

Thanks a bunch. I have the 100mm Apo and can't wait to use it on the M, along with a 280 f/4 Apo and a 19mm. Those three likely go to the grave with me. The rest of the Rs, a 50 and 35 Summicron, 28 Elmarit and 180 f/3.5 Apo will go to fund a 50 Apo, if it ever shows. I don't need the speed of the Nocti. I do have the new 35mm FLE and I am hoping that that will serve as my low light lens.

I spent a day with the new M. It blows away the M9 in performance. If your an occasional snapper and daylight only. You may not be into it. For someone like me that has an S around my neck and M on my side when shooting I need the new M yesterday. Especially hitting the Nocti wide open and nailing focus right on the iris.

posted in another thread before I saw this.

just thought I chime in on OP's 'doubts'.

I had my doubts about the M body along op's main points and thats why I sold it, I will revisit the M in a year.

Will I miss the rangefinder experience in the mean time?

-very much so because its fun to shoot RF. Wont die from not having it though

Will I miss the leica glass in the mean time?

-no because I am not selling my glass, all of them are capable and peforms and exceeds my expectations. They are beautiful and I will molest them by carassing their aperature dials ever so often. I like to know I have leica glass in my dry box! And also play it with my Gxr-M mount for now.

Do I miss my M?

No, I miss the RF experience and I love my lens. The M9/M RF accuarcy was there for me, I mean its all up to your hands and eye right?

So everything else should be consistent to the time and age that the body was launch(battery life, iso etc).

regards.

For me, the new camera still has great appeal. It's a color rangefinder with more dynamic range and higher ISO to creatively use as I'd envision I want to use such a camera. I might be disappointed in where the color and AWB are at this point, but I know I will eventually get the camera. I'm just hoping for firmware adjustments sooner than later.

There can always be buyers remorse when one is stretching oneself financially.

The M is an excellent camera and platform for Leica lenses.

We all know the premium and what we, Personally, are getting for that.

If you keep it for 3 years, translate it into a annual cost less depreciation of £750 a year

And enjoy

No.

It is by far the best digital camera ever made, and I don't believe it could be materially improved (other than various software updates which will happen anyway).

I'm sure it's the best FF digital rangefinder ever made. But best 'digital camera' outright is a bold claim. How would you test such a hypothesis?
