diser Posted April 24, 2013 Share #1 Posted April 24, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) A couple of weeks ago, LPFoto auction sold the "black paint/black chrome" Summilux 1.4/50mm for outrageous amount of dough, close to $38K here is the link, Nr. 1 644 849 Is there anyone who knows why this lens did get so much attention? Seems like sales of lenses from exactly the same batch didn't catch this much money before, for example Nr. 1 644 778 at photographica auction was sold for "only" 3400 €. Any ideas from more knowledgeable folks than myself?

jaapv Posted April 24, 2013 Share #2 Posted April 24, 2013 Two persons really wanted it, I suppose, and they are not easy to find.
luigi bertolotti Posted April 24, 2013 Share #3 Posted April 24, 2013 (edited) It could be simply bidders' frenzy (can happen - of course with deep-pockets people... ) , or there could be some detail that makes it even rarer than the (rare) Summilux black of the 1st version... the description makes to think of a "mix" black chrome / black paint finishing... . I think that the black Summilux 50 of that period were almost "make on order" items... you can find oddities between them (see herunder an example : two of the same breed... flanges of different finishing and, most of all, focusing rings with "reversed knurling" in the item at left) Welcome, dear visitor! Btw... lenses with odd finishings seem to represent a good business for auctions.... see the Summilux 35 in this upcoming auction (not to speak of the Noctilux 1,2 in chrome...) diser Posted April 25, 2013 Author Share #4 Posted April 25, 2013 jaapv, luigi , Thanks a lot for responses! While stubborn bidders could drive the price up easily, I don't think it may be 10 times higher than the average cost of the item Especially if we are talking about this kind of amount Different oddities may be the cause (and I hope they are). While I was reviewing photos of both, I wasn't able to find any specific differences. Though lens from photographica auction seems to have a worse painting quality on some elements. It looks like someone hand-painted it?
luigi bertolotti Posted April 25, 2013 Share #5 Posted April 25, 2013 (edited) Such abnormally high prices can indeed arise some doubt on those auctions... frankly speaking, they COULD be even "inside maneuvers" to heat the marketplace on some special items, given that, in general, the Leica collectors' market has seen, in recent years, new arrivals from "new riches" from some countries... I regularly track this market for 15 years about, and is a not new phenomenon in the last 4-5 years. I do NOT intend to blame, with this assertion, the specific auctions' managers...... but dealers ARE dealers, and, as any entrepeneur, do their best to add value to their business. As an "oldtime" collector and lover of Leitz gear, I simply think that on old lens in decent conditions, be it even a "trivial" Summar 5cm or Summaron 3,5, is a pleasant item to have, period : the search for rarities/oddities is another matter, and I peronally stay away from such goals (but am not at all a "deep pockets" man... ) Edited April 25, 2013 by luigi bertolotti
diser Posted April 25, 2013 Author Share #6 Posted April 25, 2013 Thanks again Luigi, I guess I'll steer away from adding this value to collectiblend then. It skews the resulting average index quite a lot... Previous six sales I have for this lens do not confirm this price. Interestingly this was the only out of ordinary odd ball from this LPFoto session. Other items were not this far from the average. Could be a manipulation from the buyers' side, not from auction house.
