Guest borge Posted April 21, 2013 Share #2 Posted April 21, 2013 I'll believe it when I see it. Let's see if I can get my MM's sensor changed in twenty years. And the LCD replaced. And batteries (original one's). Hmmmm... Yea right.

iedei Posted April 21, 2013 Share #4 Posted April 21, 2013 I'm afraid the people who come up with this nonsense are living in La-La Land, away with the fairies. why do you say that? aside from the M8 LCD situation, what other M parts are there that are not serviceable? jaapv Posted April 21, 2013 Share #5 Posted April 21, 2013 Leica's stated aim is full serviceability for ten years after production end at least. In the brave new digital world that is an eternity....

mmradman Posted April 22, 2013 Share #8 Posted April 22, 2013 How likely is that you will be alive in twenty years?. Your statement misses the point somewhat, despite demographics on LUF Leica is not only for people with one foot in the grave.
dugby Posted April 22, 2013 Share #9 Posted April 22, 2013 Leica haven proven to be very honorable in delivering on the above statements. I (and many other owners) have had my (their) Digilux-2 sensor (2003 product) replaced at Leica's expense, well after it's warranty had expired. I recently observed in 2013 Leica is still honoring that, (see digital forum). Because of this loyalty to me as a customer, I have since bought at least another 10 Leica products.
luigi bertolotti Posted April 22, 2013 Share #10 Posted April 22, 2013 This thread gave me the occasion to enter Leica Camera site... an action I don't do often (last time, I think was for a M8 firmware update) ; curiosly, i discovered that the Italian site still has menu item and pages for the Digilux 3... marknorton Posted April 22, 2013 Share #12 Posted April 22, 2013 why do you say that? aside from the M8 LCD situation, what other M parts are there that are not serviceable? There's also the DMR which is now unserviceable, not an M product I accept but a Leica digital product nonetheless. The statements highlighted by the OP are simply not true. Leica may plan their products to last decades but it's more hope than expectation and replacing the word "decades" with "years" might be closer to the truth when it comes to bodies. Lenses of course are a different matter though spare parts for dicontinued lenses - notably front lens elements for the MATE and 90mm Elmarit-M - are a problem.
dwbell Posted April 22, 2013 Share #13 Posted April 22, 2013 why do you say that? aside from the M8 LCD situation, what other M parts are there that are not serviceable? Sensors in the MM that exhibit obvious banding at base ISO are, according to Leica, not serviceable. See the thread of similar title. Decades to come? For a number of users it was useless straight out of the box. Unacceptable to me.
jaapv Posted April 22, 2013 Share #14 Posted April 22, 2013 (edited) Sorry, that is nonsense. Leica checked the cameras and could not replicate the the problem -that is the discussion (in another thread I might add). It has nothing to do with serviceability. If needed they could obviously replace any part of a product that is current. Edited April 22, 2013 by jaapv

That, Mark is basically a complaint against the modern world. Volvo can still provide spares to keep a PV444 on the road, but if one of the many electronic components on a 740 Turbo dies, Bosch has no replacement.... colonel Posted April 22, 2013 Share #16 Posted April 22, 2013 I have no issue with Leica not being able to find a component if they offer a new camera or the latest version at a advantageous price. They should just state this. As it is their current practice it in my view is quite honourable and I am not aware of any other manufacturer that does it. Leica digital is however an expensive process, there are no easy outs.
thighslapper Posted April 22, 2013 Share #17 Posted April 22, 2013 (edited) The usual disbelief is that the electronic and sensor parts will still be obtainable...... .... but that doesn't preclude a modular upgrade/replacement path for these parts ..... .... would you complain if your dead digital bits and sensor were replaced with better ones ? As Leica seem committed to this form factor and size, I personally, as a designer, would arrange the innards so future improvements could use as much of the original body as possible with no modification ........ and have a modular unit that is easily changed irrespective of future developments. What about autofocus etc .... you ask ? Well that will not be an M line of cameras..... Edited April 22, 2013 by thighslapper

Also the Vario-Elmarit-R 35-70mm f2.8 ASPH. Mine has just been returned from a CLA with the warning that spare parts are no longer available. Mine has just been returned from a CLA with the warning that spare parts are no longer available. Bob. Thanks for debunking that theory. I always thought the R adaptor was really Leica being nice to collectors. There is no future in that lens system. Bet you the long M lenses will be coming out soon.
