TomB_tx Posted April 15, 2013 Share #2 Posted April 15, 2013 The VC 50 f1.5 is an amazing lens for the price - if a bit large. My favorite lens on my M5.

I keep reading good things about it, i wonder how much the new M mount version will be
algrove Posted April 15, 2013 Share #4 Posted April 15, 2013 Don't forget about the Leica 40/2.0 Summicron. Excellent lens at a very good price.
MarkP Posted April 16, 2013 Share #5 Posted April 16, 2013 1.5/50 ZM C-Sonnar. Lots of discussion about it in the Forum. I also have a 1.4/50 Summilux ASPH (FLE) and a 1.0/50 E60 Noctilux, but the Sonnar still gets plenty of use.
sebastel Posted April 16, 2013 Share #6 Posted April 16, 2013 i consider to sell my planar. it's only f/2, but maybe still interesting to note.
IkarusJohn Posted April 16, 2013 Share #7 Posted April 16, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Huff writes about the Sonnar in his latest post. eBay prices seem to hold up well. Haven't used it myself.
rramesh Posted April 16, 2013 Share #8 Posted April 16, 2013 If you are looking for new, the Zeiss 50 Sonnar would be it. Alternately wait a couple months for Voigtlander 50 1.5 Nokton in m mount. If used you can pick up one of several older Leica such as Summarit, earlier summicron or elmar. See this forum for review articles.
Ecar Posted April 16, 2013 Share #9 Posted April 16, 2013 If you want a new lens that's as fast as f/1.5 and (relatively) moderately priced, you only really have two choices, as noted by other posters: the CV or the Zeiss. I'd go for the Zeiss, despite its quirks.

I will have a read when i get home from work but that that VC f1.5 m mount looks very sexy
gsgary Posted April 16, 2013 Author Share #11 Posted April 16, 2013 One thing i forgot to mention i will be shooting 100% b+w film on an M4-p and M4-2 not sure if that makes any difference only been into Leica M's about 8 months
gsgary Posted April 16, 2013 Author Share #12 Posted April 16, 2013 My friend has told me about the Canon 50F1.4 LTM gets very good reveiws and a dealer i use has one in near mint condition with original hood and it is well under half the price of Zeiss 50F1.5, now i don't know what to do
NZDavid Posted April 17, 2013 Share #13 Posted April 17, 2013 Zeiss quality is excellent. You may also like to consider the Voigtländer 1.4/40 VM Nokton or for twice as much a 1.1/50. For a vintage look perhaps a Summarit could be worth scouting around for, although old lenses may be prone to fogging.
IkarusJohn Posted April 17, 2013 Share #14 Posted April 17, 2013 There is a difference in quality, I understand between Biogon and similar Zeiss lenses made in Japan by CV, and Distagons made by Zeiss in Germany. My Distagon 15/2.8 ZM feels better made than any of my Leica lenses - it's very solid, no play anywhere, and the aperture clicks and focus ring are butter smooth and firm. NZDavid Posted April 17, 2013 Share #17 Posted April 17, 2013 I already have the CV 40F1.4 Nokton So you do. What's wrong with it? Or to put it another way, what do you want from another lens that is different? Vintage look, bokeh, super sharp?

Vintage look, bokeh, super sharp? It came with my M4-2 but dont seem to use it as much now, but thinking back i did get very nice shots with it some had a 3d effect to them so maybe i should glue it to the camera for the next month, thanks for your help
Nick De Marco Posted April 17, 2013 Share #19 Posted April 17, 2013 My favourite non Leica 50s in M mount are the Zeiss 50mm Planar f2 (as sharp and good looking as the Summicron for a lot less) and the Zeiss 50mm Sonnar f1.5 - has a special feel at f1.5, and is sharp at all apertures stopped down, and compact. Of course a used late 50 Summicron is always a good choice. Then, for less money, are some of the LTM lenses. Canon 50mm f1.4 is a great lens, for example, and should not break the bank. Nikkor 50/1.4 in LTM is even better (and rarer), but a little more expensive. The Russians are really cheap, and often not bad. I am a fan of the Jupiter 50mm f1.5, if you can find a good copy. But you know what? I just posted some shots taken on the dirt cheap Industar-61 55mm f2.8 llens on my blog. I was blown away with the quality of the negatives. If you like a small, sharp, light, contrasty cheap 50 (or rather 55), that's easy to find, try this out. firstlight Posted April 17, 2013 Share #20 Posted April 17, 2013 The Zeiss C-Sonnar 1.5/50 is a bit soft wide open, but it's a wonderful lens. Excellent build quality. I already had it in the past, and it will propably be my next lens again .
