Willy Fog Posted April 15, 2013 Share #1 Â Posted April 15, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, Â I have a question, if you have to decide between two Elmar 90mm f4, the rigid and the collpasible. The collapsible 13xxxxx and the rigid 15xxxxx, the year of production is nearly the same. Both looks good, but the rigid looks like new... The difference of the price is little bit more of 150$ for the rigid. Â Which one you will choose and why? Â Best regards:D

bill Posted April 15, 2013 Share #2  Posted April 15, 2013 The collapsible. It is a work of engineering art, and practical for travel. I have one.  Regards,  Bill  Sent from another Galaxy
Willy Fog Posted April 15, 2013 Author Share #3  Posted April 15, 2013 The collapsible. It is a work of engineering art, and practical for travel. I have one. Regards,  Bill  Sent from another Galaxy  Thank you!  The difference is considerable  Collapsible 240$ Rigid 395$  The only problem in the collapsible that the guy who wants to sell it, told me that the lens have some dust inside... he said that don't affect to the photos, he will pass me some photos during the week.  The lens looks... old, I mean with some scratches in the body, but I think these give some character to the lens.  Here some photos   Best regards Welcome, dear visitor! elgenper Posted April 15, 2013 Share #4  Posted April 15, 2013 Don´t know if it´s important to you, but the collapsible model cannot be used on the digital bodies. Or, rather, it must not be collapsed on them. The same goes for the M5 and the CL, btw.  I´d venture a guess that this is part of the explanation for the lower price... The digital that I own is the Fuji Xpro1 and I like it with the 35mm that comes with the camera:D  Do you think the lens looks good and the price is good?  Best regards
luigi bertolotti Posted April 15, 2013 Share #6 Â Posted April 15, 2013 I would buy the collapsible : not perfect and a little worn on the barrel... but price is good and is a fine lens to have... I used mine for >20 years on M2 and M4... and regret that it can't be collapsed on my M8 : is really a useful feature. I think that with the rigid you probably have the same rendering (is the same lens' group) and less compactness, at a higher price : if is for using and not for collecting, choice is clear, imho. elgenper Posted April 15, 2013 Share #7  Posted April 15, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) ....Do you think the lens looks good and the price is good? ...  Can´t say much about the price, since the level varies between countries, but it doesn´t sound exorbitant.  Those ´battle-scars´ are of no practical consequence by themselves (my Tele-Elmarit 90 looks far worse...). As long as it hasn´t been dropped or has glass damage or oil on the iris blades, it should probably be OK. That generation of Leica lenses were almost impossible to wear out! bill Posted April 16, 2013 Share #10  Posted April 16, 2013 The collapsible is prone to haze on the inside of the front element. It is possible to partly dismantle the lens and take out the front cell and (carefully) clean it. I got mine cheap for just that reason and did so. It will work fine on the M6 TTL and on the Fuji. Look on my Flickr stream for an example taken with this lens on my X-E1  Regards,  Bill  Sent from another Galaxy
Michael Geschlecht Posted April 16, 2013 Share #11 Â Posted April 16, 2013 Hello Willy, Â The Rigid Elmar has the advantage of separating so the lens head can be used for thru the lens viewing with various supplemental focussing mounts, bellows, etc. Â The Collapsable does not. Â Best Regards, Â Michael

gyoung Posted April 16, 2013 Share #15 Â Posted April 16, 2013 Fogging of the inside of the front element is also a 'problem' on the 2.8/50 Elmar and the 2.8/90 Elmarit apparently. According to Malcolm Taylor its the lubricants used on the diaphragm blades which are close behind the front element. He recommends leaving the lens at full aperture when not in use. bill Posted April 16, 2013 Share #17  Posted April 16, 2013 But it does on proper cameras like my M2 and MP and the OP has an M6TTL  Regards,  Bill  Sent from another Galaxy

lm_user Posted April 16, 2013 Share #19  Posted April 16, 2013 I put dymo tape on the collapsible barrel. I can collapse the lens on my M8 without worry about damaging the sensor. Not as compact as film, but still very nice  Set the tape so that the lens element does not protrude past the flange and all will be fine
