Happy new owners, maybe you can advise if the 240 is right for me:

I love the M9 - which is away getting upgraded to P so I haven't been able to use a new shooting method I've suddenly become enamored with:

With the 9 away, I happened to have just started a new series that requires spot-on focus at 1.4 & 2.0 - 1/2 & 1/2 tripod & handheld in the 1 - 2 meter range.

The 5DM2's auto focus is terribly imprecise so I've been using live view off the back screen and shooting from there. I've never used this method before and am delighted with the consistent accuracy. (Canon EF 50mm 1.4 - terrible CA - any suggestions for improvement?)

In similar situations with the M9 I've been using a Visoflex II - but that limits both the lenses I can use and situations - hard to take all that gear out walking, and I have a pretty extensive collection of Leitz glass that wants using.

The question I have: would live view off the 240's screen (EVF again too bulky) allow for fairly fast but very accurate focusing?

Thanks!

Thanks guys, am hoping the returned 9 is accurate

Why didn't we worry about this during the decades of 35mm film? We've all gotten used to HD everything - TV's, monitors etc. - the visual paradigm has changed forever

... Why didn't we worry about this during the decades of 35mm film? ...

Because the thickness and non-flatness of film hid a multitude of sins and at the same time provided a tolerance level that exceeds that required by the precise, flat plane of a digital sensor.

Pete.

The focusing on the rear screen on the M240 is nearly there. For my eyesight, I find the red focus peaking a touch too faint. Others find it fine. In telephone discussions with other users, I understand a strong suggestion is being made to Leica to allow the strength of the focus peaking to be menu selectable. The focus peaking works fine, if you have a fairly straight, contrasty edge but for fuzzier objects, like plants, bushes or even faces, it is not as good. If you are working slowly and have the time to zoom, the focussing is super accurate and I can focus a 560/f5.6 Telyt, far more accurately than I ever could with a Visoflex, even with the 5X chimney viewer.

I have a Zeiss Contax 28-85 Vario Sonnar arriving today and I will then be able to see how I will get on with using an everyday zoom handheld, where I feel that using zoom will be too awkward/time consuming. Others seem to be managing well with the Leica 28-90 and with its one touch zoom, the Contax may be even easier to use.

Try CA correction in LR or DPP...works for me. Have been using Live view focus on my 5d2 for years, works like a charm, although I have never had a problem with my 5d2's AF either, and I use all the focus points all the time...glad to see that new M owners can also now enjoy the advantages of modern technology!
