So far enjoying the camera more than any other M. Functionally it rocks and image quality is superior to the M9 series. Still evaluating though......

Jeff S Posted April 15, 2013 Share #4 Posted April 15, 2013 Thanks. Where is the strap boxed? Besides the improvements you cite, my wish list was also addressed by weather sealing and 2m frame lines; two practical advantages over the M9. leicashot Posted April 15, 2013 Author Share #6 Posted April 15, 2013 I looked at the shutter sound on a graph and it looks like the sound an M7 makes. Am I close? No, it's unlike any M sound before it. Like the M9, there is an after-exposure sound, but it snappier, faster and quieter. The sound also happens when turning on the camera, kind of like a shutter cocking before firing.
Jeff S Posted April 16, 2013 Share #7 Posted April 16, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) leicashot....I was serious when I asked about the strap....I didn't see one during your unboxing, although I'm sure it's in the package somewhere. hoppyman Posted April 16, 2013 Share #9 Posted April 16, 2013 (edited) Elevated heart rates from the Aussies queued for the camera since Kristian's report was the first here. I understand that it may have flown in from elsewhere though. Soon for us here I think! Edited April 16, 2013 by hoppyman

Soon for us here I think! Yes, it was a special order organised by a friend at Leica, and first shipment is expected in the next couple of weeks from what I heard. Anyone in Melbourne is welcome to drop by my studio and see the camera in flesh, as done by one of the forum's moderators today.

Just switch exposure metering method from "advanced" to "classic", then your camera becomes really quiet and fast. There will be no more sound when you turn on the camera. Otherwise you'll even get a shutter delay. I don't know why Leica built in these new metering methods when they slow up the camera.
jaapv Posted April 16, 2013 Share #13 Posted April 16, 2013 Because some users prefer to have them, I guess.

don daniel Posted April 16, 2013 Share #16 Posted April 16, 2013 Thanks for the tip Don. Very strange for a camera to do this. Now the camera is much better! You have now lost the possibility to use a different exposure metering method than the classic one that is center-weighted, but if you need that, you can change it again. In my opinion it is bug that in advanced metering modus the shutter opens and metering starts as soon as you turn on the camera. Leica, please fix that! jaapv Posted April 16, 2013 Share #17 Posted April 16, 2013 The advanced metering mode cannot work with a closed shutter. It is not a bug but a necessity. How should Leica fix this? Before you quote other cameras that do not need to open the shutter - those have a mirror that diverts the image to a matrix exposure measuring system. A rangefinder camera does not have mirrors or beamsplitters, so it must read off the sensor - apart from the rather intelligent off-the-curtain system the classic M metering has, of course.

In my opinion it is bug that in advanced metering modus the shutter opens and metering starts as soon as you turn on the camera. Leica, please fix that! For that to work the shutter would need to be open all the time. Not a problem though, many other mirrorless cameras does this: Fuji, Sony, etc. The shutter is always open, and the sensor is always exposed to light. When you take the picture the shutter curtain simply closes and opens again. There should be no reason for the M240 to not work this way. This would eliminate the lag and shutter sound when you turn the camera on, and would essentially make all metering modes available without changing modes. It would use more battery though. So does the Sony's and Fuji's. And it works wonders. I guess we all agree that the M240 should have had this as well.
