macjonny1 Posted April 10, 2013 Share #1 Â Posted April 10, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just a rant here! I keep losing my lens caps off my 35mm Summilux FLE. My 24mm shares the same one. Any sources where I can buy these in bulk? Maybe in packs of 50 or 100? Â For now....clear filter no cap!
Advertisement Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Hi macjonny1, Take a look here I'm sick of my 35mm Summilux lens cap!. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
UliWer Posted April 10, 2013 Share #2 Â Posted April 10, 2013 A bulk of lens-caps might have some price - so you might think of an alternative (at the same costs of say 50 lens caps): Â http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m-lenses/279070-lux-35-pre-fle-12466-hood.html
steveclem Posted April 10, 2013 Share #3 Â Posted April 10, 2013 Lens cap? Just buy a two bob Chinese effort online, no point having a fancy one if you keep losing them, it won't affect optical quality.
Guest borge Posted April 10, 2013 Share #4 Â Posted April 10, 2013 Go hoodless and use the standard E46 plastic cap. The FLE is basically immune to flare. And if you get flare you will get flare with the hood on as well.

macjonny1 Posted April 11, 2013 Author Share #6 Â Posted April 11, 2013 Perhaps I'm missing something but I think he may have been joking? maybe? Â Joking about buying them in bulk, but not losing the several that I have! I like the hoodless idea...don't use my f/1 Noct hood at all and don't have a problem with flare generally. rramesh Posted April 11, 2013 Share #7 Â Posted April 11, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Use a good UV filter and forget about the lens caps.
algrove Posted April 11, 2013 Share #8 Â Posted April 11, 2013 I remember a thread maybe a year ago about this same problem and it was discovered that the tiny o-ring on the discussed lens at that time had fallen out. Perhaps this has happened to you too.
gotium Posted April 13, 2013 Share #9 Â Posted April 13, 2013 Perhaps I'm missing something but I think he may have been joking? maybe? Â No, not joking. I lost one of these shortly after getting the lens. Several orders, errors, incorrect replacements, exchanges, and I finally had a replacement shipped at extraordinary expense from abroad. It lasted exactly ONE DAY and I lost the damned thing again.
kokoshawnuff Posted April 13, 2013 Share #10 Â Posted April 13, 2013 I just use a b+w filter with the hood and leave the cap in the box
01af Posted April 13, 2013 Share #11 Â Posted April 13, 2013 It lasted exactly ONE DAY and I lost the damned thing again. Most likely, you just didn't push the cap on properly. The hook at the cap's bottom edge needs to click into place, otherwise it's not firmly attached and will go astray at the first opportunity.

erl Posted May 25, 2013 Share #13 Â Posted May 25, 2013 Leica lens hoods and caps are a joke! The hoods are designed for convenience rather than flare elimination and the caps, one could be excused for thinking, are designed for 'turn over' - of $'s! Â I solve the problem by 'archiving' my genuine Leica removable hoods/caps and using cheap replacements at $3 or whatever in the field. Simply pragmatic. erl Posted May 25, 2013 Share #14 Â Posted May 25, 2013 Seriously, the hood does nothing to prevent flare - and offers very little protection in general. And it's a pain with filters. Â On the contrary, a good hood is indispensable for flare prevention, in many/most cases. Of course I am not talking about Leica hoods here, but effective hoods. I have spent a lifetime working with good hoods. I know they work. When using my Leicas I feel I am playing Russian Roulette with flare. Â And a solid hood does offer some physical protection in some circumstances. I have found that out in a practical sense also.

I'm just saying this one doesn't really do that well  I'm not sure I want to ask but about the physical protection but .. how did you find that out? heh
erl Posted May 26, 2013 Share #16 Â Posted May 26, 2013 100mm lens dropped off the front of my Hasselblad when I inadvertently pressed the lens release button on the body. Â Split the hood but no damage to the lens. It still works perfectly today.
250swb Posted May 26, 2013 Share #17 Â Posted May 26, 2013 Just us a UV filter and don't bother with a lens cap, they just slow you down and get lost. Â Steve
erl Posted May 26, 2013 Share #18  Posted May 26, 2013 Just us a UV filter and don't bother with a lens cap, they just slow you down and get lost. Steve  Half right. The problem then can be, in rain the UV filter can get wet and degrade the image. In dirty dusty environments it gets dirty and degrades the image. IMV a cap is still useful/necessary, at least sometimes to avoid such events.

Bill W Posted May 27, 2013 Share #20 Â Posted May 27, 2013 I guess I am weird since I have never lost a lens cap. Or maybe I am lucky. As soon as I attach a lens I take the cap off and put it in my pocket. I always have the hood on for protection. YMMV:)
