The Lama Temple in Beijing was started in 1694. The buildings form a lamasery, a monastery for monks of Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery is a residence for large numbers of Tibetan Buddhist monks from Mongolia and Tibet, and the monastery is open to the public. Many people come to pray and offer incense. The temple is said to have survived the Cultural Revolution due to the intervention of Prime Minister Zhou Enlai. It was reopened to the public in 1981.

Many thanks to you all.

Regarding incense, 2-3 years back I attended an Anglican service that was so high, the Pope would fell "down home". The incense was abundent, and it dawned on me - this is likely the source of the phrase "holy smoke". I metioned it to the celebrant - and he agreed.
