vdb Posted April 5, 2013 Share #1 Posted April 5, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Chimayo,NM So I'm lucky be be trying out the S2 alongside my MM these days. Carrying this camera for 3 days along the dirt roads of northern NM was only a minor inconvenience. Such a beautifully balanced system. This system demands excellent light...quite the opposite of the MM. The output is of course extraordinary. I'm not sure how this system will fit in with my style....the jury is still out. Prosophos Posted April 5, 2013 Share #3 Posted April 5, 2013 (edited) Hi Virgil, I like the image - and the image quality is certainly evident... Interesting question you pose about the S2 and how it will fit into your workflow. Not too long ago, I dabbled with the Pentax 645D, and the image quality was incredible. All things being equal, a bigger sensor gives you, well... more: The purple hat portrait, revisited. | P r o s o p h o s In the end, however, we parted ways. I just didn't like carrying around a bigger system, and I was reminded why I ditched my DSLRs 5 years ago. Also, I've become a total convert to the rangefinder way of focusing, finding it more nimble for getting the shot I want. I also realized that the M (for me) represents the ideal blend of high image quality and acceptable size/weight. If I was primarily shooting studio portraiture (where I can optimize the lighting) or shooting landscapes (where I can use a tripod), however, I would have kept the 645D. Having said all that, I'd love the idea of seeing some of your work fashioned from a large (S2) sensor! Peter. vdb Posted April 6, 2013 Author Share #6 Posted April 6, 2013 Thanks guys. Appreciate your comments. Peter, in the old days I used to carry a bulky Pentax 6x7 with that giant rosewood handle. Along with a Leica IIIc. But the image quality was so massively different I could live with the bulk. Now the S2 is so very ergonomic it doesn't compare to that old Pentax. But the image quality difference is not so vastly different for my purposes. What I do like with the S2 is the ability for a closer focus difference, especially with wider lenses. The autofocus is much lower than what I can do with an M. And rangefinder photography is much more natural and intuitive for me. So I kinda doubt I will stick with this kit in the long run. But, it's early.

Frank Sellitto Posted April 7, 2013 Share #8 Posted April 7, 2013 Virgil, The image is a treasure. Random spurts of delicate colors..iconic symbolism..so naturally defined. If you have the means of keeping the larger S2 I wouldn't give it a second thought about letting it go. I just bought a 500c/m with a 60mm zeiss cf. It feels good to slow things down. It can inform your approach to shooting with your MM or any rangefinder! ~f
roguewave Posted April 7, 2013 Share #9 Posted April 7, 2013 V, glad to see this frame with the S2. I found the balance, build & elegant simplicity of the system to my liking. The S2 is about the same weight as my DMR./R8 with the R80 Lux and close to the same balance & build. I love the camera, but haven't had a chance to do extended shooting with a wide assortment of lenses. This is tough light to judge any system in a short time. Enjoy & I'm sure you will deliver the goods. Have fun!
