You really wonder how difficult it can be, keeping in mind this used not to happen in earlier versions of the M9 firmware. Suggests Jenoptik's efforts may not be the best, I think Leica did the right thing to bring firmware development in-house. Also suggests the M9 firmware is a can of worms.

Well, I hope so. But let's see how long it takes to get a meaningful update (say, only 1/3 of the improvement suggestions mentioned in the "improvement thread" you started a couple of weeks ago) of the M240 firmware.

HI Mark

I might be completely wrong, but I think that it's to do with power consumption - which is also an issue with the SD card problem. I think that fixing the SD card issue has resulted in this problem with discreet mode. So it isn't really that simple.

On the other hand - I quite agree that it's better to have brought the firmware development in house.

all the best

M9 feezeups (more often when in discreet mode than when not) are something that certainly DID and DO happen in M9 firmware. This left us with the choice of continuing with reverting to 1.176 but continuing to use discreet mode or advancing to 1.196 with discrete mode turned off. Worms? Yes, but I hope someday they will finish the M9 firmware, maybe with the in house team*. (Like we used to say about Bruckner Boulevard in NYC.)

*of course, if the in house team is a team of Maestro specialists, perhaps M9 firmware is perhaps best left alone. But who is supporting the M-E and MM?

Fixing one problem while causing another has always reminded me of the Robert Sheckley story about the smags, firgels and queels. It came up back in the M8 discussions.

Still Jenoptik. And as far as I know, these developers are the only ones who know their way around the M9/MM/M-E firmware. Leica’s own firmware development team wouldn’t be much help.
