melanger Posted March 31, 2013 Share #1 Posted March 31, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Recently my Leica M7 has quit advancing film at about frame 25 of a 36-exposure roll of film. (This has happened with Kodak and Ilford products.) If I try to force the camera's quick-wind lever, then the film's sprocket holes tear, and I need to remove the film in darkness, etc. Can someone please help me diagnose this problem? Thanks, everyone. Melanger

pop Posted March 31, 2013 Share #2 Posted March 31, 2013 If it happens with each film, you could sacrifice a film which is past its date and have a look into the camera when the film has stalled. Is the film properly wound on the take-up spool? Can the film be rewound before the perforation is torn? Does the rewind crank turn freely? andybarton Posted March 31, 2013 Share #3 Posted March 31, 2013 Isn't there a known issue with the clutch on the rewind knob which can cause the rewind to jam before the film is finished? I think that the camera needs to go back to Solms for a service
animalhairs Posted March 31, 2013 Share #4 Posted March 31, 2013 Not sure about the clutch, but you might want to try tightening the washers beneath the rewind knob. melanger Posted April 1, 2013 Author Share #5 Posted April 1, 2013 All good questions--here are more facts: The film is properly wound on the take-up spool, to the best of my knowledge, and can be rewound before the sprocket-holes tear. The rewind crank turns freely. Thanks again. Melanger.
normclarke Posted April 1, 2013 Share #6 Posted April 1, 2013 I have found this problem to be caused by the clutch in the take-up spool to be too strong. The spring that governs this needs to be reset to exert less tension. Best, normclarke.
melanger Posted May 11, 2013 Author Share #7 Posted May 11, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) All, I took the camera to Nippon Photo Clinic (NYC), which repaired the camera and resolved the issue for about 300 USD. The problem was with the rewind knob. Interestingly (and usefully), the repaired camera has begun to display during the first several seconds that the camera is switched on the ISO of the film--this never happened before! Thanks again for the useful responses. Melanger
