I don't see that many comments anywhere about Leica's 'large ball and socket head' (14-110) so I thought I'd post a couple of paragraphs about mine, having recently taken one into use.

Although I have been using Leica gear on and off since the early 1960s, I am by no means (to use modern parlance) a Leica "fan-boy" - everything I buy and use must fit my critical requirements.

I bought this head because I needed something more suitable for my 'M' than the two chunky heads I use with my Nikon gear so, as of necessity, I chose the 14-110.

As many will know, the ball itself is ridged with eleven deeply engraved concentric rings (for good reason) The 'wing nut' which locks and releases the ball and camera assembly (with just a 60 degree twist) is VERY positive indeed - once locked it is impossible for the head assembly to move unintentionally!

I would not want to use this head with, say, a Nikon D4 and a long lens, but it's not designed for that sort of kit but, for an 'M' and a standard lens? Perfect.

The tripod that I use originally came with a spare (removable) centre column. Discarding the no longer necessary round 'platform' at one end, I simply screwed the the 14-110 directly to the column.

I can now simply remove the column and head in one, in a second or two, whenever I need to mount the Nikon stuff.

Yes, the 14-110 comes warmly recommended!
