Can anyone recommend some photogenic hotspots in and around York, please? I have been unable to shoot for the last 7 weeks and am determined to make the most of my day out on Wednesday!

I live close to Manchester, and within easy reach of Leeds and Sheffield, so I'm spoilt for choice, but fancy a change. I haven't been shooting street for long, so am enjoying the chance to familiarise myself with these cities and what they have to offer. My favourite hotspot so far is the University of Leeds, which is a fantastically designed piece of 60's concrete architecture

Some places are doomed to be swarming with children in school parties, but you could try the Yorvik centre, the Railway Museum, The Shambles, and of course for a sit down Betty's Coffee Shop.

If street photography is your bag (it isn't mine though) I guess you would need to be in the old streets like The Shambles and Stonegate, between the Minster and one of the main drags, Parliament.

Architecturally the Minster is wonderful, but not easy to capture from the outside, because the surrounding streets are very close, and it is huge. Also one of its main windows is under repair (see the thread on Second Seaside Challenge in Whitby for a picture). For the Minster, I would say you would need an ultra-wide (or shift lens) and a long lens for details. I've always used a tripod. There are many old interesting buildings, both in the old streets and elsewhere, which you would encounter simply by walking.

You might find it crowded in school Easter holidays, and there are always tourists, which can be very frustrating, or a source of photographic material, depending on you point of view!

If you are coming by car, I would strongly recommend using one of the Park and Rides around the ring road, unless you are bringing a huge amount of gear.
