35mm Summicron asph ISSUES/ADVICE

Hey everyone,

I just recently got hold of this beautiful 35 summicron ASPH although i have a slight issue...

The front ring where you clip the hood onto and screw additional filters into spins freely around, this doesn't not seem to be effecting any of the glass elements. I've read a few things of people saying they had the same problem and it's just something inside that needs tightening, screws or something?

I'm normally pretty competent when it comes to fixing things but this is something i don't feel comfortable doing this as i don't want to risk it.

Has anyone else had the same issue?

Thanks.

(i can include diagrams if need be)

I don't know the 35mm Summicron.

Perhaps it is the same "issue" as with the 28mm Summicron: the srews which fix the front element are not tight enough and are prone to get loose if you move the hood.

At least I got the right size screwdriver and fixed them as fast as I could - no problems since, even after frequent usage of the lens. Though you need the right tool - with one which doesn't fit the screws exactly it gets worse.

The only screws i can see are the ones on the very rear of the lens (where you mount lens to camera) not sure if this is the same with the 28mm, did you pop off the rear and gain access to the relevant screws in order to tighten them up?

Thanks

No - if there are screws to be tightened they should be on the front part of the lens housing. I looked at my version of the pre-aspherical Summicron and didn't find any screws there. So I fear your lens should go to a someone who can take care of it professionaly

Yeah, I spoke with someone on the phone earlier and said that if it's the issue he thinks it is they can put the screws back in with a bit of locking glue to help prevent it from happening down the line. He referred to it as 'saturday morning job' which makes me think it's not such a big deal.

Still wondering if anyone else has suffered from this problem before though...

I have the current version of the 28 Summicron ASPH and I have notice that the front ring jiggles a little bit. Is this the issue you're talking about?

Yeah... i think you're probably having the same issue although from the sounds of it i don't think yours is loose enough to spin fully around like mine. Im sure if you gave it enough time it would do the same. From what i can make out it's not threaded because you can turn it many times in each direction without it taking effect. As it's been the weekend i haven't really been able to call repairs and get a good understanding of it's issue but i'll be on the phone tomorrow. Maybe you should get yours checked out sooner before your lens hood is able to turn 360 degree around ha

  • 2 weeks later...
Sigh.

Let me know what you hear, I suppose I haven't sent a lens in in a few months :-).

I got my lens back this afternoon, all seems solid thanks to Malcolm Taylor! If anyone suffers from this same issue, i suggest putting it into a specialist for repair... thankfully, it was a low cost repair! The other great thing is that it was checked to make sure the focusing is all spot on.

I'll post some results when i stick a roll through...
