Leica has long been established in Portugal, more precisely in Vila Nova de Famalicao, in the North, where it started producing the R3.

Yesterday, March 21, a new modernized factory has been officially inaugurated in Lousado, 3 km from the former one. It has been built on a 5 hectares plot and covers 16,000 square meters, represents an investment of about 15 million euros and employs 54 persons.

The "product" exhibited on the occasion was a S2.

And new details just collected :

-The 54 employees I quoted are new workers hired, the total workforce of Leica Portugal being in the order of 650 to 700.

-The 15 million euros investment is the cost of construction, the total value of the new investment being about 22.5 million.

-Contrary to the general industrial trend in the country, Leica Portugal is expected to increase its turnover about 25% to 50 million euros this year.

-An interesting point : Leica Portugal has now 40 years of know-how (production started in 1973), and half the workforce has been at least 25 years with the company.

-And to finish with, the only Leica products being engraved "Made in Portugal" today are the compact binoculars.

Thanks-merci, Jean-Claude. Inutile de dire que le mécontentement des manifestants n'a rien à voir avec l'inauguration! ici comme partout, on reproche l'austérité au gouvernement.
