nggalai Posted March 20, 2013 Share #1 Posted March 20, 2013 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Well well well, I’m quite impressed. No, let me rephrase that: I’m very impressed with Leica’s customer support in Switzerland. I had called Nidau a couple of weeks ago. After two years of heavy usage, my M9 needed a total overhaul and I wanted to schedule it, to have as little downtime as possible. I had also asked about the M9-to-P “Upgrade” and was told it took about 5-7 business days. Having read about Solms customer support turnover, I thought that sounded too good to be true, but well, the Swiss customer base is a lot smaller, so, eh. This and the next week shaped up to be rather slow, photographically speaking, so I decided to send my M9 in earlier than planned. It went off to Nidau Monday morning. According to shipment tracking, Leica Camera Nidau received my M9 yesterday morning. Lo and behold, the converted M9 pseudo-P came back with today’s mail. We’re talking less than 24h here, if you consider shipping. When I received the package, I first thought I had forgotten to include something crucial, so they had just returned it. Not so, the camera was upgraded, cleaned, the rangefinder readjusted and two parts not covered by the upgrade plan replaced. And for ⅓ less than Nidau stated on the phone. Everything included (with extended warranty and shipping), just short of € 850. I don’t know whether the still-valid warranty has anything to do with how “cheap” this turned out to be, but well, I’m one happy camper right now. So, at least for Switzerland, I guess you can forget all them customer support horror stories that float about Leica. I’ve never had a CS this quick and responsive, neither with Olympus, Nikon nor Minolta. And don’t get me started on Apple. Btw, seems I got the “new” shutter release button, with the shorter threads. Does anybody know whether I can just file down my sharpies, or do I need a new one? Cheers, -Sascha Edited March 20, 2013 by nggalai

Ulrik Posted March 20, 2013 Share #3 Posted March 20, 2013 Does the returned camera still carry the same serial number ?
nggalai Posted March 20, 2013 Author Share #4 Posted March 20, 2013 Does the returned camera still carry the same serial number ? Hehe, good one. Didn’t think of that … But yes, it does, just checked.
stephan_w Posted March 20, 2013 Share #5 Posted March 20, 2013 Hehe, good one. Didn’t think of that … But yes, it does, just checked. it has to, as the flash shoe is fixed to the camera, not the cover. Besides this, I second your opinion about Leica Switzerland, they are very "oldschool" in the positive sense. Unfortunately, they cannot do all jobs (especially on lenses), but overall they are really fast.

Unfortunately, they cannot do all jobs (especially on lenses), but overall they are really fast. I wonder whether it’s due to Mr. T.W.? He seems oldschool-ish on the phone (“Twitter? I’m not interested in that sort of thing.”), and when I sent him my Summicron from the 60s for an overhaul he actually phoned me to apologise, at length, for his inability to get one specific screw out, so he could only fix about 95% of what was wrong with the lens. Anyway, just wanted to keep good vibes going. Naturally, problems are more often posted and discussed on the Web, so a little spark of joy can’t hurt …
dunkelblau Posted March 20, 2013 Share #7 Posted March 20, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Leica Switzerland in Nidau/Biel provides exceptional service. I went there twice to have a camera rangefinder and two lenses looked at. Very friendly and helpful technicians and sales people. In some respects they seem 'more Leica' than Leica Solms: The technician wasn't entirely happy with the choice of lubricating oil Leica Solms was using in some of their new lenses and Leica Nidau had suggested use of a different product to improve the feel of the focussing mechanism, but Leica Solms, he said, just wouldn't listen;-)

nggalai Posted March 20, 2013 Author Share #9 Posted March 20, 2013 Mr. T.W.? I definitely like his style; knowledgeable, polite, helpful, kind :-) Well, let’s hope he’ll stay well and healthy, then. I don’t know whether he’s exceptional in his communication skills and “work ethics” as I didn’t have dealings with every single technician, or technical department, on this planet – but he sure as hell has made a huge impression on me over the past three years or so. Repeatedly.
Ecar Posted March 22, 2013 Share #10 Posted March 22, 2013 Agree. Great service. Unfortunately, many of the lens jobs need to be done in Solms.
enboe Posted March 23, 2013 Share #11 Posted March 23, 2013 Here in the states, I sent mine in for M9-P upgrade, switching from Black to Chrome, out of warranty, with a four-week turn-around quote. It took eight weeks, and did come in some 15% below the listed price. Was I disappointed, not in the slightest. It's a beautiful camera that I intend to keep even when I receive the new M that I have on order. Congratulations. Now go shoot some pictures.
