MikeMyers Posted March 18, 2013 Share #1 Posted March 18, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've got an M8.2 which I've been using for several years now - I enjoy the ability to shoot infrared photos, which I'd lose if I change to a newer model. One thing that has always bothered me, is to try to fit it into my normal workflow. With every other camera I've got, I can quickly open up the image folder, and see all the thumbnails. On my Sony VAIO TT series laptop, running Vista 32-bit, I've never found out how to do this. I don't want to change computers, or change software, or change cameras, or anything else. All I hope to do, is find a 'codec' that works with what I've got now. I had the same issues on my desktop PC running Win-7 64-bit, but I was able to fix things with this download: Adobe - DNG Codec : For Windows : Adobe DNG Codec 2.0 I would very much like to do the same thing for Vista. I'm very underwhelmed by the M8's ability to create jpg images, but the quality of the images shows up nicely if I use 'dng'. Right now I shoot both simultaneously, but that's a silly idea the more I think about it. I expect to be using Windows 8 for everything in the near future, so this may not be as much of a problem in a few months, but I've read where Adobe "used to" have the codec I need - but I can't find it...... Any advice or suggestions?

cbretteville Posted March 18, 2013 Share #2 Posted March 18, 2013 Googeling "image viewers dng" turns up at least two plugins to exploder you could try. Both of which claims to be supporting Vista and will set you back about $20. Have no experience with either. Carl
MikeMyers Posted March 18, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted March 18, 2013 Thanks for the information - I spent a good bit of time searching, and while I found references to an Adobe 32-bit DNG support (such as How to view DNG files and thumbnails in Windows), I couldn't find the download. I did find other people who were also searching for this codec. In the meantime, I think I will try out the Fastone Image Viewer (FastStone Image Viewer - Powerful and Intuitive Photo Viewer, Editor and Batch Converter) ...it doesn't accomplish what I started out wanting, just a way to have Windows Explorer show the DNG images, but after looking into what Fastone is capable of, the more I read, the more I like it. For what it's worth, I see no more point in capturing any M8 images as jpg images - I knew this years ago, but when I simply want to take a set of images to give to a friend or relative, the 'dng' format is a problem. I did this last week, shooting in jpg+dng and kept the dng images for myself, giving my brother the jpg images. Neither of us liked the jpg images. I end up kicking myself, thinking what's the use of using such a capable camera and lens, if I throw away much of the quality while saving as a 'jpg'. Thanks again for checking this for me. Your suggestion would work out fine, but if at all possible, I'd like to find and download the codec from Adobe directly.
