dystorsion Posted March 10, 2013 Share #1 Posted March 10, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently got my Leica M2 CLA'ed. Everything seems to work fine but I've noticed a slightly darker band on top of my frames when I scan them. For the most part, it's consistent throughout the frames but in some frames there appears to be none. Oddly, my Delta 3200 roll showed none of these dark bands, which leads me to think that it might be a shutter speed problem. Both the HP5+ 400 and Neopan 400 have showed these bands so far. Moreover, when these darker bands do appear, they're not always consistently straight as you will see. Some of the bands have a wavy shape on the edges. Some also reach down further into the frame than others. When the bands do appear, they seem to carry over to the next frame continuously (as in you can follow the band). As a reminder, the darker band always appear on top of the frames. Without further ado, here are some examples: HP5+ 400 shot into the sky to demonstrate a relatively straight band: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/926791/img227%20copy.jpg Neopan 400 shot to demonstrate the occasional unevenness of the darker band: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/926791/img169.jpg HP5+ 400 shot to demonstrate the unevenness of the darker band again: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/926791/img234.jpg Miscellaneous details: Lenses used: 50mm Noctilux, 35mm Summilux FLE Ilfotec DDX developer used Paterson tank

doubice Posted March 10, 2013 Share #2 Posted March 10, 2013 This definitely does not appear to be a shutter-related problem. I would suspect processing inconsistencies? Cheers, Jan

That's a relief. I'll look into it. If anyone else has anything to recommend please do so.
250swb Posted March 10, 2013 Share #4 Posted March 10, 2013 Not enough dev in the tank, or the reel sliding up? The early tanks had a locking collar to stop the reel riding up, the newer System 4 tanks are a better fit and do it with friction, but the reel, especially if you use old style reels, can ride up with vigorous agitation. An elastic band usually fixes this. Steve
Michael Geschlecht Posted March 11, 2013 Share #5 Posted March 11, 2013 Hello dystorsion, Welcome to the Forum. When there is a shutter problem with an M2 there usually is vertical instead of horizontal banding since the shutter moves horizontally side to side. Best Regards, Michael
dystorsion Posted March 11, 2013 Author Share #6 Posted March 11, 2013 Thanks all for the replies and the welcome. It is indeed a problem with the reel sliding upwards and not having enough developer to submerge the film. I ordered the System 4 tank recently. Cheers!
