Leica R 28mm PC SA on M9?

Hello,

I recently read, that some people use the Leica R 28mm PC on the M9. Are there any users, that can rate its performance in comparison with the Canon 24 TS-E II on a Canon full frame body?

I ask this, because I'm in the market for a shift lens to shoot architecture. My dream set-up would be a Cambo RS 1200 with P1 IQ-Back but this is unfortunately not in my budget, so I'm looking for a cheap alternative. I really dig the look of the M9 CCD, but read that the Leica R 28 PC SA isn't even remotely as good the Canon 24 TS- E II. What are your opinions?

Which set-up would you choose qualitywise? 5D MkII + 24 TS-E II versus M9 + 28 PC SA?

Thanks for your help!

Best regards,

Jan

With all due respect, I disagree with that affirmation: "the Leica R 28 PC isn´t even remotely...etc".

I do own the 28 PC-R, and the results of this lens are excellent. I don´t need to have the 24 TS (II), because I know very well what excellency is.

Therefore, and because both lenses are excellent, I choose to look at your question from another point of view:

- I assume you own the M9 already, so buying the 28 PC SA will cost you aprox 1300 €.

- if you own the 5DII, the 24 TS (2nd generation) will cost you 2100 €.

- if you don't have the 5DII, add it. ;)

I hope I am being clear enough... :)

Funny you brought up this question today. I was trying the R 28 PC on an M with adapter of course. First time using the lens period so it will take MUCH time to get to know it well.

I do like the LV for seeing what I will get. Just think about seeing how you have adjusted the scene as it goes and before you shoot it. I hope that's what this lens/body combination will give me.

Thanks for your answers so far. I trust you guys here.

But I asked this question in this forum: Leica R 28mm PC Super Angulon vs Canon 24mm TS-E II - FM Forums

and got different answers.

Could you be so kind and post some pictures with the M9+28 PC SA? I searched flickr, but hardly found anything. I'm interested in the amount of details in the corners when shifted 8mm or more (and stopped down to ~f8). This would be great!

Best regards,

Jan

Jan,

Manolo is a Spanish professor of photography who is very experienced with PC lenses. I actually bought his old 2.8/28 PC Super-Angulon-R from him after he bought a second newer one.

You should trust his comments and advice.

Thank you, guys, for trusting me...;)

I must say: I agree partly with that forum: the 28 S-Ang PC-R distorts (pincushion), has color aberration, and has ±11 mm shift (the 24 Canon has ±12 mm).

But being this true, at the same time it is true that the 28 PC-R is excellent: the color aberration can be easily corrected in PP, the pincushion distortion doesn't disturb me (I had it already with film, it belongs to the process), and the detail is more than ok, even for pixelpeeping.

Let's not forget: the Canon is a 24 mm, and the Schneider a 28 mm...

I will post some pictures later, Jan

Cheers,

Manolo

Excuse me, I don't understand what you mean...

The operation with a shift lens is easy with the M: just shift it mm by mm (turning a knob in the case of the 28 PC-R) and observe at the same time what happens with the image thanks to liveview. When you arrive to the framing you had in mind, just press the button :)

Professor-

I am a total idiot with PC lenses. Never owned nor used one before. I plan to use it out in the US Southwest and I want to reduce wide angle distortion. I am trying to get hold of the lens manual. I see you can spin the adjusted arm around, but do not know what I am doing by spinning it. Also there is a 2 position lever and wonder if it stops the lens down to see depth of focus. Lost patience with it after 5 minutes since I attracted a crowd and could not concentrate any longer. See told you I was an idiot with this lens.

:), someone calling me professor... sounds funny. Ok, I earn my living teaching, so I have to accept it...

Algrove, I think reading that manual (it's available at Schneider-Kreuznach's page) will be very helpful. It is short, well written, and hits the nail. You will need 15 min. maximum. If you then have further questions, don't refrain from asking...

Cheers,

Manolo

As promised, here is a photo taken with the 28 PC-R.

1st : full picture

2nd : detail upper left corner, Chromatic Aberration not corrected

3rd : detail upper left corner, Chromatic Aberration corrected, and Defringe (amount 7; purple 33/63)

No sharpening, only the default in LR4

Shifting was done diagonally (up and to the left), therefore the details visible in the cropped pictures belong to the very border of the image's circle.

Diaphragm was f.11.

The metallic orange structure behind the curtain, and the rods, among other particularities, show how good this lens is.

Algrove,

I too am a PC ignoramus! When I bought his lens Manolo kindly sent me an 'idiot's guide to PC lens workflow on the M9" - even I understood it. After some discussion with him I redrafted it as English is not his native language (although he's pretty good) and he published here in the forum:

http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/261755-using-2-8-28-pc-super.html

It's explains everything about using the lens and presents a really good workflow, although it can now be simplified for the M with live view.

Hi Manolo,

I can't find the Schneider user guide for the 28PC in English, my German is non-existent, and the auto-translate does a bad job.

Do you have a link for the guide in English?

Regards,

Mark

ps found it here:

hi, Mark,

in Schneider-Kreuznach's page the link with the 28 PC-R manual in english is broken.

There is this manual of the newer TS lenses, that is also valid except, of course, for the pages covering tilt.

http://www.schneideroptics.com/pdfs/photo/PC-TS%20Anleitung%201-12%20en.PDF

There seems to be a new Schneider 28/4.5 TS digital lens, with Canon, Nikon, Sony Alpha and Pentax mounts...

It is apparently heavier than the 50 TS, which weights 1,5 Kg.

The point with it: being so heavy, it sports a tripod mount: the camera 'hangs' from it. Stitching can be done as it should: moving the camera, and with the lens (and therefore the point of view) fixed.

Cheers,

Manolo

Thank you all for contributing! The corner crops look good.

Just one final request: Could someone post a download link to a DNG- File with this lens. It is hard to judge from webpictures (even if they are 100% crops).

Best regards,

Jan

Jan,

send me your email and I will wetransfer you the dng file.
