I am reaching out to the forum for more information. I sent in my 6 month old 135 mm APO Telyt for the 6 bit upgrade on December 28, 2012. It went to New Jersey and had their fee quote first week of January. As I am going on vacation at Easter and getting nervous, and no lens yet, had my dealer call the repair guys in NJ and my dealer was told they are waiting for parts. The only part I assume they need is a new lens mount.

Is 3 months too long? Is 3 months reasonable for Leica? What do you people think?

Adding 6 bit coding to the 135 is a new thing as they were not previously doing it even on request. I guess when they began offering the coding, they were overwhelmed and ran out of the coded mounts. I am waiting to get the same lens and they now come from Leica already coded.

3 months seems to be a very long time. Leica maybe preoccupied.

I don't have that lens, but I have had 6 bit codes added to some lenses by qualified technicians.

My understanding is, they take off the mount and have it milled by somebody else.

Then they put the part back on and do whatever else was requested.

I have been very happy with the results so far.

I bought one this week and they do indeed now come pre-coded. Anyone buying one should check it is already coded to avoid these delays. I can't for the life of me understand why Leica refused to code the lens for so long.

Leica NJ just this morning told me it was not a parts backlog that has had my 135 sitting there so long, but the sheer volume of work. Based on their estimate my total turn around time will be about 10 weeks--way beyond the 6 weeks I had imagined when I sent it in.

This does seem a bit too long, but keeping in mind this is not all they do there in the Service Department, it could make sense and if combined with a few weeks of no new APO 135 mount inventory....

My lens has been there for 9 weeks, if you do not count shipping time. It will be interesting to see exactly how long it takes. I will have my dealer call them next week to see where in the service line I stand.

My dealer was told they were out of parts and it could be their way to cover up their workload. Maybe it's time they hired a few more people in NJ. To be a world luxury brand, they need to provide an appropriate level of service. What was acceptable in the 1960's is not acceptable today as the world moves much much quicker.

Half an hour to do it yourself with a dremel or similar.......

So if I sold you a lens that was sold s a "6 Bit" lens and you found out it was done in my basement with a Dremmel tool you would be perfectly happy and "ok" with it, right?

This is what all you do it yourselfers are saying in a way. The other side of this argument is that once you take your Dremmel to the lens, it is yours for ever and ever and ever and ever.

I have not seen an add yet on any sale posting that says "6 Bit coding done by me in my basement with Dremmel tool - but trust me - I did a good job." :D

Leica NJ yes charges for the 6 bit work but INCLUDED in the price is a lens calibration and check out which yields a Leica Certificate saying it s inspected and meet factory specifications. In the event of a sale IMHO that has more value than a basement 6 bit Dremel job.

Today, it has been 90 days since my 135 APO Telyt went in for coding and it is still not ready. Today, my dealer was promised NJ would have it done by the 100th day.

Received my lens back on day 94. Great service from NJ when they put their best into it as they were told I am going on vacation tomorrow. Their last minute effort is greatly appreciated. :):):)
