M3 - mounted slide film? But let's call it 1 m

M2 / M4 / M5 / M4-2 / Most M4-P / MP3 / M9 / MM - 1 meter

M6 / M6ttl / M7 / MP - .7 m

M8 - Who really knows? .7 with the x1.33 crop factor, plus .68 magnification??? Beats me.

M8.2 - 2 m

M 240 - 2 m

More twists than a barrel of pretzels and certain to keep the faithful occupied with debate for decades to come...

The M8

Sorry Leica, this one was waaaayyyy off.

70 cm

Mediocre at best. Especially with anything wider than a 35. It was noticeably off even without the ability to immediately chimp a shot.

1 m

Works great. A good compromise that worked flawlessly for the first few decades. If you need anything more accurate, you need an SLR.

2 m

Works really well. If you shoot a lot of portraits at 1 meter or 70cm check that screen and crop a little close

.7m

The other factors are unrelated to the optimized focus distance. And an M8 with upgraded frame lines is the same 2m as the M8.2.

What's best depends on one's shooting habits (distance); there is no absolute right or wrong; it just so happens that most people typically shoot at longer distances.

Hello Everybody,

Just as a small addition:

1.5 meters for a 135mm lens without goggles on an M3.

Best Regards,

Michael

Not just on the M3 but 1.5m was true for all models with frames for 135mm calibrated for shorter distances than 2m.

For 90mm frames the calibration was 1m for all mdoels which don't have a 2m calibration.

The former rule was calibration for shortest focussing distance of the equivalent lenses for frames in the viewfinder.
