Jeff S Posted February 24, 2013 Share #1  Posted February 24, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Here  I need to stop reading great things about this lens. It would have been a bit more interesting if he had drawn comparisons to the 50 Summilux ASPH.  Jeff
Advertisement Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 Hi Jeff S, Take a look here Puts weighs in on the 50 APO Summicron Parts #1 & #2. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
johnbuckley Posted February 25, 2013 Share #2 Â Posted February 25, 2013 For him to call the APO-Summicron-Asph is quite meaningful. And having used it for the past month, to my less sagacious eye, I tend to agree.
Jeff S Posted February 25, 2013 Author Share #3 Â Posted February 25, 2013 For him to call the APO-Summicron-Asph is quite meaningful. Â For him to call it what? Sorry, I missed your point. Â Jeff
wattsy Posted February 25, 2013 Share #4 Â Posted February 25, 2013 I see Puts is referring to the lens as ASCR50 which reads more like a film type than a Leica lens. I'm not sure what is wrong with 50 APO or 50AA?
philipus Posted February 25, 2013 Share #5 Â Posted February 25, 2013 I find Puts's abbreviations of lens names quite silly. It's not like he's saving ink or anything. Â Still he's interesting to read (and even I, being fairly pedantic when it comes to language, have learnt to ignore his numerous spelling mistakes and odd formulations (though it irritates me that he misspelt whisky)). Â I also would have wanted to see a comparison with the 50 Summilux Asph. And I would have wanted to see some results of the lens used on film. Â But I must disagree with his final paragraph - anyone who wants sub-f2 ability will have to settle "for less".
Paul J Posted February 25, 2013 Share #6 Â Posted February 25, 2013 The performance of the lens hardly improves when stopping down and stays on an equally high level from f/2 to f/11 with a slight drop in contrast at f/16. Â Giddy up. Â I wonder if for some, a better upgrade is not the M but the APO-Summicron.
jto555 Posted February 25, 2013 Share #7 Â Posted February 25, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) ..formulations (though it irritates me that he misspelt whisky)). Â Â Â So did you! It is 'whiskey'.
jbl Posted February 25, 2013 Share #8 Â Posted February 25, 2013 Sigh. My ability to resist this lens is now gone, if only for it as a stunning optical accomplishment. Â -jbl
Dr. Ulrich Rohde Posted February 25, 2013 Share #9 Â Posted February 25, 2013 I have taken M 240 pictures with this lens, on loan from my dealer, and compared it to the other Leica 50mm lenses and the Zeiss 50mm/2. Â The APO lens wins !
01af Posted February 25, 2013 Share #10  Posted February 25, 2013 ... though it irritates me that he misspelt whisky ... Uh. That's just a symptom for the quality of the whole article. There's so much nonsense interspersed everywhere. Of course I do wholeheartedly agree with his overall assessment of this lens. He says, "when looking at the Apo-Summicron-M 50 mm Asph pictures with a sagacious and disciplined gaze, the pure clarity of the overall image and the crisp rendition of fine detail, even in the near-unsharp areas, are stunning and provide a dimensionality and life-like rendition that is unequalled." This is exactly what I said about this lens more than half a year ago.  But his confused statements about specific aberrations, curvature of field and lens elements, and "critical requirements" seriously make me wonder how this man was able to earn a reputation as an expert. He does know a lot, no doubt about that—but then there also are several things he obviously has only fuzzy ideas of. His weird mixture of insight and confusion is pretty hard to digest ... just like "Scotch whiskey"
microview Posted February 25, 2013 Share #11  Posted February 25, 2013 …it irritates me that he misspelt whisky.  Whisky is Scotch/Scottish (ie from Scotland). Whiskey is the Irish/American spelling. However, now I see Puts' usage, it is, as you say, wrong!
philipus Posted February 25, 2013 Share #12 Â Posted February 25, 2013 Apologies for having driven this thread off in an unintended direction. Â "Scotch whiskey" Â But, yes, exactly. A contradiction in terms.
