Hi all,

I've tried to use the new elmar 50 with a sooky-M and a boowu-M (2 old close up things)

No problem to fix the lens after removing the black rear ring, a kind of baffling which does not exist on the old elmar 2.8/50

But impossible to get a crisp image with both the 2 systems.

In the literature, I read that the old elmar 2.8/50mm works after fitting the lens in its collapsed position..

Why the new does not ?

What is the "new Elmar 50"? Can you give the part number please. Thanks.

Um does the SOOKY even fit the 50mm f/2.8 Elmar-M? I thought that was for the 50 Elmar (non "-M") f2.8 (and the Summicron I).

Infact, that is the issue : the SOOKY-M (aka SOMKY) is designed for the lens' tube of "old" Elmars and collapsible Summicron (and the lens unit of rigid Summicron with the UOORF ring) : Leica has never given any guarantee that the Elmar - M lens' tube has exactly the same length, so no surprise that it results out of focus even if one can fit it into the SOMKY.

OK, but why did Leica waste time (and money) doing a very sophisticated rear tube, similar to the old elmar, and without any usefulness ? Strange.

The official answer from Leica:

"the new Elmar-M 1:2,8/50 has a different optic design. This design was made only for the Leica Camera not for the near sooky or boowu system. The only choise is, that you use the new Elmar-M 1:2,8/50 in the normal position."

The old 50mm f/2.8 Elmar (screw version) is always used on the BOOWU in the normal, extended position. Before everybody had scanners or photocopiers the set was used to copy A4, 5, or 6 originals. It's still better than using the Visoflex and extension rings or bellows to copy flat originals in this size range as it is automatically square to the subject.

As the lens is usually stopped down to f/11 or less the depth of field allows thin subjects to be photographed too. In scientific work I always place such subjects on a sheet of mm graph paper which avoids calculating and including scales in reproductions.

Yes, but we're talking here about the BOOWU-M, where the front of the collar collar has a spring-loaded bayonet that accepts the 3 lugs on the rear of the collapsed lens barrel.

I'm pretty sure the reason is that the female M bayonet is too deep for the thickness of the A4 BOOWU collar (which is determined by the extension needed to obtain the c. 0.12 magnification to fit the 297mm A4 page on the 36mm negative).
