pop Posted April 4, 2013 Share #21 Posted April 4, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Is NEX-7 the best (low cost) option for R lenses? How about NEX-5n? I started with the NEX-5N. Later, I bought the NEX-7 as well. Both were second hand items, so I can't tell anything about prices. Here are some of the differences between the cameras which I personally found relevant: NEX-5N NEX-7 smaller case larger case (wider) difficult to use with gloves easier to handle with gloves I keep on pressing unwanted buttons) I still press on video rec button external EVF EVF built in EVF articulated (tiltable) fixed position fewer controls, overloaded two extra thumb wheels for selectable settings will not fit into bag with EVF mounted fits into small hadley bag
Advertisement Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 Hi pop, Take a look here Leica R lens and NEX7. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
hamey Posted April 4, 2013 Share #22 Posted April 4, 2013 (edited) I just bought two R lenses (21-35 and 28-90) and an R6 - I already had the 80mm. I am also considering to have a digital camera to use them. Is NEX-7 the best (low cost) option for R lenses? How about NEX-5n? Congratulations on your 21-35 and the 28-90 mm, I have both these R lenses and are beautiful for Digital use. Personally I wouldn't bother with mirrorless cameras, these R lenses are big and heavy especially the 28-90mm, R lenses where designed for SLR use not puny little toy cameras IMHO I would recommend either a Canon or Nikon, however both are not perfect. If you select the Nikon, you need to change the Mount. Or if you select the Canon EOS system, all you need is a simple adapter, I use the Novoflex which is Excellent and I can still use my R lenses with my Leica R film Cameras. Due to the Lens shroud on the back of the 21-35 and the 28-90 it will prevent you from using these lenses Without hitting the mirror on the full frame Canon 6D or 5D-3 which is a pity, so only the 1.6 crop factor DSLR are useable. At this time I am using the Canon 600D which I have found it very good and it's relatively cheap, actually it's now cheaper then the Leica EVF module. Another option is to try them on the Leica M240, no doubt this could be an excellent choice, as I havn't Tried this combination I cannot comment on it, but the M240 was designed to couple up to R lenses. Good luck. Ken. Edited April 4, 2013 by hamey
k-hawinkler Posted April 4, 2013 Share #23 Posted April 4, 2013 NEX-5N has less red cast than NEX-7 on some WA Leica lenses (35 mm and lower). WATE works pretty well on both. I bought both new. NEX-5N with optional EVF was similar in cost to NEX-7, but was available earlier. For standard and longer focal length I prefer NEX-7. For WA the NEX-5N. NEX-7 has a very nice 2-axis virtual horizon. NEX-5N doesn't. NEX-7 has 24 MP, NEX-5N has 16 MP. ...
Angora Posted April 4, 2013 Share #24 Posted April 4, 2013 Maybe you guys could also take a look at the NEX-6 then, which also has an EVF yet is cheaper than the NEX-7.
Apo-Ron Posted April 4, 2013 Share #25 Posted April 4, 2013 The combination of R- and M-Lenses with the NEX-7 is giving me great results. magosak Posted April 4, 2013 Share #28 Posted April 4, 2013 (edited) Hi Ken.Thanks for your recommendations. I actually had a Nikon D3 which I had sold and moved on to M9 (which I also sold in anticipation for the new M). I still have my complete set of Nikon lenses 14-24, 24-70, 20-200/2.8 that I didn't want to sell just yet. This would make it so easy for me to go back to Nikon DSLR but I want something smaller and easier to carry. I used the money I had saved up for a M240 when I had the opportunity to buy these R lenses and the R6. It will take me quite a while to be able to afford the new M and meanwhile I want to get a low cost /small size digital solution to use these lenses. Congratulations on your 21-35 and the 28-90 mm, I have both these R lenses and are beautiful for Digital use.Personally I wouldn't bother with mirrorless cameras, these R lenses are big and heavy especially the 28-90mm, R lenses where designed for SLR use not puny little toy cameras IMHO I would recommend either a Canon or Nikon, however both are not perfect.
