what ever it will be, let it be light, strudy built and compact.

I'm tired to have two bodies with really heavy lenses, it makes me wish a DSLR with a zoom.

So something like an Elmarit 35/50 would be nice, maybe collapsible, robust and not to expensive for traveling.

Another suggestion would be a new Summcron 35 AA, that please may have googles and goes down to 50 or 60 cm. THAT would be great!

I've long thought that Leica should do a line of character lenses - re-invigorating the characteristics of a Summar, Summitar, Hektor, Mountain Elmar, Thambar etc of old. Not to build a "bad" lens by todays standards, but to show their skills by being able to design a particular look into a lens, not just scale the technical heights for MTF purposes.

In other words, do what Zeiss did with the C-Sonnar but for a wider range of focal lengths.

I really like this idea. And would be interested in buying such lenses if they were to be produced. Let me add the highly coveted Summarex portrait lens to the mix.

We are in the field of pure speculation... ;) : of course the M (which seems to start as a succesful camera) can open new fields, so I bet, around mid-year or september, for an announcement of a macro (90 or, more probable, 100) and a long (180) ; to make them ONLY compatible with M wouldn't be so welcome, at this moment... so they could make some smart and acceptable accessory / variant (googles ?) to make them usable on former Ms (with some risk with a 180... but I think they won't made it BIG... M appeal is also related to compactness vs. FF DSLRs... so I'd bet for a "normal" aperture like 4 or 4,5-4,8 with no dramatic issues of RF focusing)

With the live view and EVF on the M, the need to make really compact lenses with mimimal finder blockage is less.

I think Leica will wait to evaluate the success of the M240 before launching lenses like the 28 Summilux as it clearly will be larger than the 28 Summicron and will most certainly have significant finder blockage.

Or they could update the M7 with a faster shutter and longer rangefinder base?

Bring back the Thambar!

My money would be on a macro, hopefully a 1:1 version.

But I agree with others, that if they are trying to attract converts from Canikon, then there is a gap at 180mm and beyond.

Lastly, I also agree re: the 28 Summilux. I think the cat is pretty much out of the bag on that one.

These are the three obvious holes in the lineup. The 180mm would be the easiest of the three from a design perspective I would have thought...

But I guess only Leica know about the timing, since they have a big move coming up in December. This would would have to impact throughput I would have thought. Setting up, checking and calibrating all that equipment won't happen overnight...

A 180mm lens would need bigger goggles than those of the bulky Elmarit 135/2.8 to be focussed at decent apertures with a rangefinder. If we get one some day, it will have interchangeable focus mounts for Visoflex and EVF i guess but it won't be usable directly on any other M body than the M240 presumably.

How about a compact 24mm/2 Summicron ASPH with a click stop at 0.7m, which could then focus down to 0.35m if you push past the detent for close focus with the new Leica M's focus peaking. The lens would have floating elements and be well corrected for both lateral and longitudinal chromatic aberration (somewhat short of Leica APO standards to keep price reasonable). Priced less than the 24mm/1.4 Summilux and less than the 24mm/3.8 Elmar ASPH.
