DigitalHeMan Posted January 12, 2013 Share #1 Â Posted January 12, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Today I picked up a second hand 1975 Summicron 90mm lens for a good price locally. Both the glass and cosmetics of the lens are clean and in good condition. Â When I focus with the lens, it takes a lot more effort compared to my only other Leica lens, the 35mm Summarit. The resistance is consistent throughout the whole focusing range of the lens, so I'm wondering if this is normal, or just dry lubricant, or if I need to get the lens looked at (it did come with a 2 year warranty). Describing the amount of effort is difficult, but I definitely need to use two fingers, rather than the Summarit which can easily be focused with a single finger. Â The guy in the shop said it was normal and would possibly loosen up a little bit with regular usage, but I'm wondering what your opinions are? Does the bulk of this lens mean that it offers more resistance when focusing, or should it be as easy to rotate the focusing ring as on other smaller Leica lenses? Â Thanks in advance! Stealth3kpl Posted January 12, 2013 Share #2 Â Posted January 12, 2013 That sounds similar to my 90 Summicron. Pete
wosim Posted January 12, 2013 Share #3 Â Posted January 12, 2013 Same with my Summicron 90mm. Â I think, there is a lot more glass to move than in smaller lenses. A little stiffness doesn't bother me. Â Regards

JeTexas Posted January 14, 2013 Share #6 Â Posted January 14, 2013 When I purchased my 90mm Elmarit, it was very stiff. I had a CLA done and now it's very smooth. It's only $85 for a cleaning at Professional Camera Repair in Houston and the turn around was in under a week.
Stealth3kpl Posted January 14, 2013 Share #7  Posted January 14, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've never really used mine but when I did 2 or 3 years ago the results were beautiful:  https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vjlCaM7dp1k/TCZ2fioah9I/AAAAAAAAJeo/y7TPORcec_w/s525/52320060.jpg  https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-EyR_EmFieSU/TCZ2exmqseI/AAAAAAAAJeo/_8JoKcIdamQ/s792/52320059.jpg  Pete
Bill W Posted January 14, 2013 Share #8 Â Posted January 14, 2013 I need to try mine. I think the fact that they are seldom used might lead to some sitffness in the focus at least that might be the case for me.
Erik Gunst Lund Posted January 14, 2013 Share #9 Â Posted January 14, 2013 It's the grease aging and stiffening up, a clean and re-lube is needed...
akiralx Posted January 15, 2013 Share #10 Â Posted January 15, 2013 Today I picked up a second hand 1975 Summicron 90mm lens for a good price locally. Both the glass and cosmetics of the lens are clean and in good condition. Â When I focus with the lens, it takes a lot more effort compared to my only other Leica lens, the 35mm Summarit. Â The 35 Summarit (in fact the Summarit range) has a very light focus action compared to other modern Leica lenses I have.
