Lenses and numbers of.....

I wished I was as wise as you are. 5 lenses only across two systems...

I tend to always end up with a trio of 28/50/90 equivalent primes, so my current travel set on my M8 is made of a CV21/4, ZM35 2.8 and CV75/2.5. I have also a fast CV 35 1.2 II which I bring at night or use indoors. I also have a trio of Leica 28/2, 50/2 and 90 2.8 waiting for an eventual M9 or M240.

And that's without counting 10+ lenses in Nikon mount :D

But I often just use a 35mm on my M8 or 50mm on my D700, so I probably could just live with a single 50mm equivalent prime.

Limiting my lenses to 5 or 6 over two interchangeable lens systems is based more on my ability to effectively use each lens rather than being wise.

I have my ZF.2 100/2 up for sale on another forum and plan to use the proceeds to buy the 70-200/4, but I may break down and replace it with the ZF.2 135/2. It is just hard to not have one Zeiss lens paired to my D800E. In reality I think I would use the 70-200/4 more often.

From my past experience with Zeiss manual focus Nikon mount lenses, I really think the 21/35/50 trio will meet my Leica M needs best. While I have owned many lenses, I have normally limited it to 5-7 at any one time. Time will tell if I can hold back purchasing more M lenses unlike most others on this thread.

Actually, I hide it in plain sight. I've convinced my wife that it is an investment and display it in curio cabinets throughout the house. The "good stuff" is interspersed with the more prosaic gear. Fortunately she doesn't inquire about how much I paid for it.

I have given her the name of a reliable consignment broker. When I depart this vale of tears she is in for a surprise when she has it valued!

Regards, Jim

Jim,

Thanks for being so open and honest, I am very envious ;)

I don't think for a minute your invested funds will be wasted either :D

Hello Mark. I love my 75mm Summilux! It's my favorite lens (and use it almost exclusively for portraits). I mostly shoot it wide open or stop it down to f/2. With a 1.4x magnifier I don't have a particularly hard time nailing focus.

Erik

Erik-That 75/1.4 is a beauty. Absolutely love mine.

jamesk8752,

There was an old saying in my camera club "May my widow never obtain what I paid for it"

Hopefully I bought well and she will get even more... :)

Of course I won't be here to receive either praise or abuse.

Regards, Jim

Gosh boys....that's all so impressive....I'm blown away!

All I can add are two Leica M series: .95 Nocti and cron 90 ASPH.

But seriously saving for a 35 fle. The MM's arrival broke the bank last month. :D

Hardly two entry level lenses

Super Elmar 21...10%

Summicron 35 ASPH...33%

Summilux 50 ASPH...35%

Summitar 5cm LTM...2%

Macro Elmar 90...10%

APO Telyt 135...10%

I also have a 9cm Elmar LTM used for probably less than .5% of my shots, and a Zeiss ZM 21 f/4.5 (used for the 10% before I got the SEM 21), that has yet to be sold but is no longer used

As I like to try lots of different lenses/bodies/systems I don't have more than about 10-15 lenses at any one time. I've owned probably over 100 in the last 15 years and sometimes I forget that I have sold a lens and then wish I hadn't, but then I have all the photos to look at that I took with it... (I seriously regret selling a nice version one 35mm Summicron, for about £500 two years ago though)

Current lenses for the M system are

Color Skopar 28mm, 35mm f2.8 Summaron, Summicron-C 40mm, all of which are used on my M8. I plan on getting an M2 soon as I want to use the Summaron on film.

Regards,

Mike.

  • 28mm VC Ultron f2 - Use it all the time
  • 35mm Summaron f3.5 - Nice and light, but too soft and too slow. Currently on eBay. Soon to be gone.
  • 50mm Summilux f1.4 - My favorite lens, but a bit tight on the crop sensor NEX-6
  • 90mm Elmarit f2.8 - Great rendering. Sharp. Love it. Hardly ever use it.
  • 135mm Hektor f4.5 - Great bokeh. Hardly ever use it, but I keep it because it's cheap.
  • 135mm Elmarit f2.8 - Canadian with goggles. Shot with it quite a bit, but it doubles the weight of my bag when I take it along. Has terrible pink and green fringing. It's probably headed for eBay soon.

Now that I'm shooting the NEX-6 instead of an M8 I also use a Canon FD 200mm f4 and a Canon FD 500mm f8.

I shot a photo of my silver lenses last night before the 35mm gets shipped off.

Too many, but I got bit a while back, no recent acquisitions

Zeiss ZM 18/4

Zeiss ZM 25/2.8

Zeiss ZM 28/2.8

Leica SM 50/3.5 Hektor ?

Leica SM 135/4 Elmar ?

Leica SM 50/1.5 Summarit

Leica M 35/2 ASPH Summicron

Leica M 50/0.95 Noctilux

Leica M 50/2.0 Summicron V4

Leica M 50/2.8 collapsible Elmarit M

Leica M 75/1.4 Summilux

Leica M 90/2.0 apo Summicron

Leica M 90/2.8 TEM

Leica Telyt 280/4.8

Leica Telyt 560/6.8

Kilfitt Fern-Kilar 400/5.6

Perar Super Triplet 35/3.5

Nikkor S 105/2.5 SM

And that Canon 50/0.95 that I sold and still kick myself for!

The 50 cron gets the most use, Noctilux is second and Elmarit M and 35 Cron seem to come in third. I "see" mostly in 50mm, but I've really enjoyed my other lenses and still use them all intermittently

I heard a a top pro say that if you want to create your own style then stick to just one prime lens. Because this lens will keep the proportions of every photograph you take the same. Interesting. However this has inspired me to keep the number of lenses I have to a minimum.

Voigtlander 21mm color scopar. 40%

35 mm Leics summarit. 50%

90mm Leica summicron. 10%

I am looking to maybe upgrade the 21mm voigtlander to an Elmarit and the 35 mm summarit to a summilux at some point which would be nice. But I would like to keep the same number of lenses.

I think that's the smart way to go. I'm working my way down to a 28mm, 50mm and 90mm myself partly because that's all I seem to really shoot with and partly to help pay for the new M. It's just hard to let the others go.

Ha! Honfleur, that name rang a bell but it took me a while to remember why. It's mentioned prominently in "The Breads of France" 1978, by Bernard Clayton. If such loaves are still available, lucky, those who live there.

More On T: 2.8/28 ASPH, 2/35 ASPH, 2/50 Summicron v4. An exquisite M3; the 28 with a CV finder, I fake the 35. All very nice indeed.

That was exactly what I tried to do and I ended with several lenses for each focal length... :D

Cheers,

Bruno
