CL trivia - different strap for vertical eyelets?

Inspired by another recent post on the forum, reminding me what a wonderful, compact and capable camera the CL actually is, I decided to try to take mine out more often.

One problem I have with the standard plastic strap is that in cold weather it becomes very brittle and unyielding, and in Sweden that makes the strap pretty unusable for two-thirds of the year. I'd like to keep the camera hanging vertically (and not use a halfcase), so I wonder if anyone has any experience of straps that might work with the existing eyelets? Preferably in leather, and definitely without the scratchy metal rings that are often used on compact camera straps.

I checked Luigi and Zhou, but neither appear to make straps that are compatible with the thin CL eyelets.

Sorry if this makes some members roll their eyes at yet another strap thread - the non-standard CL variant was rather hard to research.

The strap I use on my M5 should work on the CL too. I just found an old Pentax split-leather strap from the 60s that wraps through an eyelet and connects with rivets through a split in the strap, and wrapped it through the M5 stap lug:

I also have a CL, and know what you mean about the stiff plastic strap. I still use it, but my Zhow case does have protected strap eyes. But as you noted, these would hang it horizontally.

I would think that from the look of the lugs on the M5 above, any strap for a Nikon would do, the same straps fit any of my bodies from the digital dslr back to the FM and thus I can use a nice old plain black one on the newest camera rather than the garish advertising one they currently supply. Made of tough synthetic fabric not leather, but should be OK in cold weather, although we have nothing in the UK to compare with Sweden!

They are similar width to the Pentax one above, which I also have on an S1a. D-rings, or in the case of Nikon a triangular split ring, were very common in that era.

The Pentax split leather strap featured above, and the standard leather Nikon strap of the same period seem to be almost identical. I had them on all my Nikon's so its another clue as to what to search for on Ebay, which I'm about to do myself as its a great idea for the CL.

Thanks for all the really useful replies! Think I'll start by checking a couple of local dealers that tend to have a drawer full of old cases and straps - I hadn't thought any older straps would be compatible.

I also learned that the M5 has strap lugs for vertical hanging - must confess to never noticing this before! :o

If you want a Leica strap the ones for binoculars have this type of fitting. The Leica a-la-carte M strap uses split-hole-and-rivet fittings as well, but will set you back a whopping 100 Euro!
