Has anyone gone digital then given it up?

Before I began photography, I knew that I would prefer the look of film, but chose digital because I assumed the learning curve would be quicker. After using a dslr for my first three-and-a-half years of photography. I have recently switched to an MP and shoot b&w 99% of the time. To me there was something "wrong" with the look and imaging chain of digital. I feel more at home with film, and haven't looked back since.

i don't understand why one has to give up something to do something.....if we lived in 1955....film only is fine. in 2012, it would be a daft shame to not use all the great technology we have at our disposal.

shoot film.

shoot digital.

enjoy everything.

I did not say one has to give up digital. Reread my post. I only if one wanted to or was considering it. This is not an anti digital thread.

I shoot digital and film. I like them both. I also take showers and have baths. One is quick and convenient, the other is slower and more measured. One delivers a clean me with the minimum of delay. The other delivers a relaxed me but takes a little more time. I would never give up one for the other. ;)

Hear, hear.

I never did take up digital because I don't care much for screwing with computers. I like everything about the process of silver based photography and printing - yes, even developing film.

Some would say that such preferences are signs of madness. I have been called worse and survived. :D

I tried a few digital cameras, and results were OK but I hated using them... until the M9 came out. The shooting experience is as close to my M6 as possible. The convenience and results are fine - but I'm starting to set up my darkroom again after a 15 yr pause. (Someone just offered me a Focomat Ic to replace my Omega...)

I used EOS SLRs from the late 80s until 2009 when I bought a 5D2 having been, I admit, seduced by the simplicity and instant results (I won't say satisfaction) of digital. During the summer of 2011 I went back to film when I bought an M3. I am now selling the 5D2 to channel my photographic creativity through my M, my Barnack and my old trusty 1N. The only digital I am considering is the new M but that will depend on its image quality. I'll likely just buy a new scanner instead.

If one really loves the process , I think is the best reason to stay with film : imho, a people that has a good control and knowledge of the chemical process can obtain, generally speaking, results that are more satisfactory than with digital.

As for me.... I abandoned the darkroom more than 20 years ago... and don't see alternative to digital... :o

Contemplating giving up digital. Anyone else done this? I would be living with film only other than my iPhone.

I've done this recently. My (first) Leica M6 arrived this morning and so as of today, I'm film only with the exception of my iPhone.

I shoot with Toyo 45AX and a Cambo 8x10 large format cameras and now I have my Leica M6 for everything else.

I actually started photography with digital in 1999 with a Fuji digital camera and was digital until about 2007 when I bought a Mamiya RB67. I'm fascinated by film and I find the more "work" I have to do to shoot, the more enjoyment I get out of it. I don't mean that I intentionally make things difficult for myself but I feel like I'm "crafting" a photograph when I do everything manually. For snapshots, I'm more than happy to use auto-everything, however!

I can't say I will never go back to digital but for the foreseeable future, I can't see that happening.

I ditched Nikon Pro DSLRs for the simple life of mechanical Leica film cameras. I've not looked back. I recently tried a Ricoh GXR with M-adaptor but my heart's not in digital. An M2, 35/2Asph and Portra 160 are heaven to me. I guess exposure, have time to look at the view rather than the histogram, I gaze into my wife's eyes in the restaurant instead of chimping, and we get all the excitement of the holiday pics coming through the post rather than spending days post processing RAW files. Life's so less stressful now. When C41 is no longer available I'll consider the M (maybe sooner).

I enjoy both film and digital mediums. I love and prefer B&W film prints especially medium formats. I love the colors of M9. I tend to shoot digital for low lights and film during the daytime.

If everything works out, I will learn film processing and have my own darkroom. No, I do not plan to give up digital - just bought a D800E last month :D

These days, however, I shoot more digital since I am shooting my son's soccer games. Yes, for sports my D300 and D3S are perfect.

i suppose i don't understand the concept of "giving up digital" as you stated in your original post. digital is the technology of NOW....my opinion that anyone into a particular interest should at least be versed on the machinery of now.

For example, a race car driver from the 70s may prefer driving race cars from the 70s, however he will surely be more than happy to drive a race car from now as well. The more options and the more experiences, the better, IMO. I don't really see the point in reducing one's technological options as it is merely introducing limitations to the mix.

I did this over 2 years ago and never regretted it.

I prefer the proces of film, shoot less but think more about it. Slow down.....

I shoot 35mm and Medium Format now.

I was shortly tempted by the MMonochrom but dit not bite in the end.

I can't mix film and digital ... it's one way or the other!

If i was a professional photographer i would most likely shoot digital for work/ convenience and film for my personal work.

I recently found a thick stack of 8x10s from my college days; when we would shoot and process almost daily. Since I'm retired now and just shoot for fun, this was kind of a tipping point to move me back to film as the main medium, and back to a very active darkroom. I won't recapture youth, but maybe the fun it used to be.
