Hi.

I have just bought a Summilux 50 mm 1,4 in crome.

On the test papers, and on the box there is an oval red mark as shown in the picture below.

What does it mean? Is it a repaired lens or?

My other M lenses do not have that mark.

...Albert, I just checked my 50/1.4 ASPH (black version, catalogue #11891). There is no such oval mark, or indeed any other mark, on the test certificate, apart from the usual model and serial numbers (and barcodes). To my eyes, the lens is mechanically and aesthetically perfect. Focus is as spot on as it was straight out of the box. Hope this helps.

...I can also confirm that as in the case of my 50/1.4 ASPH, the test certificates for my other Leica products (lenses, camera bodies and binoculars) do not feature the oval or any other mark.

Only my Summilux 35 FLE has this mark. Unfortunately I don't know what it means though perhaps it has something to do with the red stamp which says "Ausstellungsware: Funktionssicherheit wird gewährleistet", ie showmodel checked for proper function and under Leica warranty.

...hmmm - would that mean the same as "Ex-display model"?

I would guess so as well but it's the first time i see such a stamp, thanks for sharing.

Yes, I can confirm this. I've bought a number of official ex-demo lenses from Leica in recent years and all had the red oval on the box, paperwork and on the bar coded label stuck on the plastic bag that the lens is ultimately packaged inside.

Thank you for your comments.

I have contacted my local Leica agent, and he told me it is an order from my dealer for demo purposes. The demos will normally be forwarded in the production line to satisfied the dealer.

It is a normal production with any changes from normal production - only handled as "express".

Regards

Albert

  • 1 year later...

My dealer told me a different story - as part of the ISO manufacturing quality certification (I forget the number) a proportion of goods has to be taken from the end of the chain, opened and inspected. The same standards specify that items cannot be injected into the chain, so these goods cannot be put back in the production line, repackaged and sold as new. Hence they are marked with an o and sold as such at a discount.

So, not demoed, just looked at.

Albert's item has the "O" but NOT the additional stamp evidenced by Philipus on his box... and I saw such a stamp on a lens' box at the dealer where I bought my M... (but it was 4 months ago and don't remember if it had the "O" too) ... i tend to think is not a demo, and the "inspection" hipotesis seems to me more probable ; I think that Leica, directly contacted, could give an answer.

I have purchased many ex demo items. Including my m9p. My boxes have orange green and yellow dot stickers on them. All have worked flawlessly. I prefer ex demo as I assume they are checked and cleared as within correct tollerances. Plus they are discounted.
