Summicron DR questions

A few questions for you folks who have experience with the Leica M mount 50 mm Summicron with goggles.

What is the closest close-up distance that can be achieved with this set up? Is it dependent upon which M camera the lens and goggles are attached to? For example, I think my M6 focuses closer than my M3.

And do the goggles fit on certain M cameras better than on others? Do they mount so close to the face of the camera that the bezel around the M3 viewfinder interferes with the goggles? Would they work better on an M2 for example?

Any and all info on this would be greatly appreciated. I have a long term project coming up and I would love to shoot it with a Leica M, but if I can't get close-up enough, I may have to use my Nikons.

Thanks everyone.

Hello Tim,

Dual Range Summicrons fits fine on M's 4, 3, 2 & 1 altho w/ the M1 there are frame lines in the viewfinder but there is no rangefinder. Beginning w/ the M5 some M's use the lens w/o modification & some, such as the M5, require modification of the close focussing attachment.

The DR was originally designed for the M3 & M2.

Normal focussing range w/o close focussing attachment:

Infinity to 1 meter (40"). Image 410mm X 620mm (16.5" X 25")

Close up w/ close focussing attachment:

88cm to 48cm (35" to 19"). Image: 170mm X 260mm (7" X 10.5")

There are no clearance problems caused by the nifty little frames around the M3 windows that help keep finger prints, etc off of the glass surfaces. These useful frames were deleted in subsequent models. Most likely as a cost saving measure.

Best Regards,

Michael

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the info. Quick question, what do the Image sizes mean in your post. I understand that without the goggles in close focus mode the focus range is Infinity to 40", and in close focus mode with the goggles it's 35" to 19", but I'm confused with what you mean by the Image measurements.
