pgk Posted November 22, 2012 Share #1 Posted November 22, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently bought a 'user' 90mm Summicron M. Its serial number puts it as being a 1963 lens (see http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/Summicron_%28II%29_f%3D_9_cm_1:2) but it is black not chrome as suggested by the Wiki on this site. It also looks like the lens shown here: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/Summicron_%28II%29_f%3D_9_cm_1:2 on the right except of course that it is black - the lens head does unscrew. It appears to be E48 as its thread appears just too small to take a 49mm filter. Condition is used but the only 'fault' I can find is marginal backlash in the focus which I suspect can be remedied easily enough. Looking through the Wiki's linked posts indicates that there were numerous variations within this Summicron and I'm wondering if I have an earlier type lens with a later or odd serial number assigned to it, or whether the lens was simply a variant built from various components which interchange? Advertisement Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 Hi pgk, Take a look here 90 Summicron identification. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lct Posted November 22, 2012 Share #2 Posted November 22, 2012 I have no experience with this version of the Summicron 90 but the SEEOM 11123 did exist before 1963 (it is listed in a 1961 tariff of mine) and was sold in both black and silver version if i'm not mistaken. See Leitz Canada Sum. 90/2 - Leica User Forum.
UliWer Posted November 22, 2012 Share #3 Posted November 22, 2012 The most complete survey on the complicated history of the 90mm Summicron is to be found in the Wiki of the German Forum: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.de/index.php/LEICA_M-Objektive#90mm_f_.3D_9_cm_1:2_Summicron_ZUSAMMENFASSUNG It says that the SEEOM (no.1.651.001 to 1.819.000 produced between 1959 bis 1960) usually was in chrome but you could get a black one on demand. pgk Posted November 23, 2012 Author Share #4 Posted November 23, 2012 Thanks. This is the actual lens that I have (http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/File:M-9f2-ii.jpg) except mine is in black - both focus and aperture rings are 'ribbed' as in the photo. So from lct's post it simply seems that some of the 1963 lenses were supplied in black chrome and that the Wiki needs amendment.
