jip Posted November 20, 2012 Author Share #3 Â Posted November 20, 2012 I can buy one for less than that at the moment, but since I might upgrade to a M in the future it might be a good investment. Since I've heard lots of good stories about the lens... But now I wana see results I'll go google some!
rsh Posted November 20, 2012 Share #4 Â Posted November 20, 2012 With the New M arriving next year, they will go up in price considerably, especially those in mint to like new condition.

The Apo Telyt 280/4 is the lens which is in demand.  The market for the 280/2.8 has always been slow - and it will look odd on the front of the New M9. Furthermore you need a very large bag or its aluminium case to hump it around - plus a Charles Atlas course!  dunk

jip Posted November 24, 2012 Author Share #8 Â Posted November 24, 2012 I'm thinking about buying it with either a film R8 or a digital Canon or Nikon camera with adapter... Rick Posted November 24, 2012 Share #11 Â Posted November 24, 2012 Today I saw that two just sold on the 22nd WestLicht Photographica Camera Auction. Both had the Leica metal case and the filter and other accessories. The first was in near mint condition and sold with auction fees for $4,788. The second was in B+ condition and sold for $2,073. Quite a range. Mint copies of Leica always seem to bring huge premiums. I bet it would be hard to tell the B+ from the mint one with a casual look. Â I think it is an incredible lens and it is faster the famous f4/280 APO that always sells for much more. It is hard for me to tell the images apart between these two lenses. I've never yet shot the same thing with both so, I can't say that would be true if I did a side by side. Here is a picture taken this summer that I posted in the photo-section of the forum: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/nature-wildlife/253390-mountain-goat.html
pgk Posted November 29, 2012 Share #12 Â Posted November 29, 2012 I've owned and used this lens and whilst its good, its close but not quite up to the current standards of such long fast lenses IMHO. I used mine on a 5D2 and needed to use around f/11 to really get its optimal results.
Rick Posted November 29, 2012 Share #13 Â Posted November 29, 2012 Paul, I found the image to be optimum for the 280/2.8 stopped down one stop where it becomes difficult to tell apart from the 280/4 APO. By f11 the lens is not as sharp at center as it is at f4-5.6.

By f11 the lens is not as sharp at center as it is at f4-5.6. I was comparing it to a Canon EOS 600/4 I owned for a while and which was simply a better lens IMHO although by f/11 the Leica lens was pretty close. tomlianza Posted December 4, 2012 Share #15 Â Posted December 4, 2012 I own this lens and the 180 apo 3.4. I have adapted them for use with the Nikon d800. For the 280, I purchased a gun-stock from Bush Hawk. I shoot mostly between f2.8 and f5.6 and the lens is quite good. To get the most out of the D800 you need to be extremely careful about image motion. The excellent ISO performance of the D800 allows for very high shutter speeds even in low light situations. I am still getting used to the whole arrangement and it will take some practice to develop the focus tracking technique. The 180 is just a lovely lens, but I rarely have the subject matter for it. I use both lenses in manual mode. I set the perferred aperture and manipulate the shutter speed.

George Furst Posted December 23, 2012 Share #18 Â Posted December 23, 2012 One like you described sold at auction about 3 weeks ago for $2,400. A mint version with APO 1.4x extender sold for $3,200 on eBay 3 months ago. I suspect that next year these with be selling (not listing) for $3,500-$4,000. Hope this helps. I use both the Apo f2.8/280 on my R4S film camera and the Telyt 6.8/400 and 6.8/560 lens with a viso on my M9 camera. I find the Apo 2.8 with 1.4 extender to be sharper than the 6.8/400 but the latter is easier to use as it includes the gunstock shoulder attachment and is well balanced and I can view the images immediatly. As for price here in Korea the Apo 2.8/280 is not popular because of its size and weight. I purchased mine for $2000 with case and all. I now note that there is one on my club webb site (LeicaClub.net) for around $1800 in mint condition with all accessaries in the original box. You will need a Korean language reader to use the site but they always have good deals. I have looked for the Apo f4/280 here to no avail and gave up and purchased the Apo f2.8/280. I will not purchase the former from overseas as the duty would be around $900 and there would be a lot of red tape.
