MarkP Posted November 2, 2012 Share #21 Posted November 2, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks gang. I'd already told him point-blank that if I'd known about the abrasion, I wouldn't have bothered to bid. He's in Australia, so I'm going to have to send it and wait for a refund. That part sucks. I plan on returning it, or filing a claim if he wont take it back. Just making sure I'm not crazy...Thanks! Definitely get your money back:mad: Bloody Australians (ex-convict stock) ps: it wasn't me. Advertisement Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 Hi MarkP, Take a look here Is this acceptable for a used lens?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
colonel Posted November 2, 2012 Share #22 Posted November 2, 2012 Bloody Australians (ex-convict stock) . this often happens with ebay all over the world I would trust an Australian as much as anyone I do buy from ebay, buy frankly only 100%-99.7% feedback, and I talk alot to the seller to satisfy me about the item, also confirming the return period Its probably better to buy from dealers, taking a 5-10% premium, so you can see the lens and have a real place to return it. Or by trusted dealers by mail order. I just bought a 35mm Summicron from a well known UK dealer who told me it was mint. The lens was boxed with all the papers. On close inspection I found a slight notch on the aperture wheel, not a scratch which goes to the bare metal, but still there in the black. Also a tiny piece of dust behind the front element to the side. I have decided to keep the lens as this is all trivial but unfortunately you have to check everything. Another example, a few months ago I saw a 90mm elmarit advertised by another well known UK dealer, in fact one of my favourties. I went to the shop to look at it and noticed faint scratches on the front element, obviously caused by over cleaning. This should have been on the description. In this life, whilst I always give people the benefit of the doubt initially, the only person you can trust at the end of the day is yourself ......... Paul J Posted November 2, 2012 Share #24 Posted November 2, 2012 I hate to say it but this is why I don't buy this kind of thing off eBay. Only from a reputed dealer with a returns policy. Truth is, some people use eBay to offload broken or damaged or all together not working items. Something of that price, it isn't worth it. Open a dispute with eBay, they are really good at sorting that kind of thing out.
colonel Posted November 2, 2012 Share #25 Posted November 2, 2012 Oh please:rolleyes:. Get with the Antipodean humour. Didn't you get that I'm Australian ( Location: Sydney)? I do, but 1000s wouldn't Last time I was in Sydney had some difficulty understanding the slang, but it didn't matter as the girls were so pretty (not sure if you are still allowed to talk like this these days but I live dangerously )

tobey bilek Posted November 2, 2012 Share #27 Posted November 2, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Is a used Rolls Royce OK with a smashed fender after all it is used. There is a difference between used and abused. All these marks affect picture quality. That is a BS line and how does he know without B/4 & after photos taken in all conditions? You will have trouble reselling so you can not predict the future value of an already damaged lens. RETURN
farnz Posted November 2, 2012 Share #28 Posted November 2, 2012 ... Didn't you get that I'm Australian ( Location: Sydney)? If you'd said "Seedneey" ... Puyt. (Of course as a Kiwi I'd pronounce it "Sudny".)
andym911 Posted November 2, 2012 Share #29 Posted November 2, 2012 why anyone part with over 2000 usd for a high value product without handling it beforehand simply shocks me. there are enough reliable leica dealers around with web shops that make the whole transaction more sensible. i would not accept such a condition for that price. Messsucherkamera Posted November 5, 2012 Share #33 Posted November 5, 2012 Not at all! This made the lens about $500,- cheaper IMO. Sent it back in a safe way , or ask for a refund. Absolutely unacceptable that they stated it was in "excellent cosmetic and working condition" without disclosing an abrasion on the rear element. That is fraud, plain and simple. I expect the actual market value of that lens is much less than you paid for it. I would return it. Agreed. For an abrasion of that size, the seller had a duty to disclose it and describe it in terms of length & width. I don't know what it would cost to have Leica NJ replace the front element of this lens but whatever the cost is, it should have been deducted from the selling price - or at least the buyer should have reduced the price by perhaps $400-600USD. Bottom line: The seller acted in an unethical manner and you were sucker punched.

menos I M6 Posted November 7, 2012 Share #36 Posted November 7, 2012 But it likely buys polishing and re-coating. If it was a bargain at more than half a thousand USD less, I'd possibly go that route, if the mark bothers, but at the price, you paid, it clearly would be a refund and a place on the "don't buy from this vendor - list". I'd send it back after clearing all eBay/PayPal hurdles, to assure, to be safe about the money. It clearly is a damage, that should be mentioned in such a deal.
