Timmyjoe Posted October 29, 2012 Share #1 Posted October 29, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) The vulcanite on my M2 is finally beyond repair. There are so many places missing that I want to just recover it. I've got an M6 TTL and the leatherette covering on that doesn't feel nearly as nice in my hands as the vulcanite on my M3 or the vulcanite that used to grace my M2. The M6 TTL leatherette feels almost slippery in the hand, compared to the vulcanite, which gives me the feel of a more solid grip. Does anyone have recommendations for a Leica M covering that will give about the same look, but more importantly the same feel, as the vulcanite that the camera originally came with? Thanks for any and all input.

payasam Posted October 29, 2012 Share #2 Posted October 29, 2012 I have re-covered three screw mount bodies with "skins" from Aki-Asahi. A good product which is easy to apply. When my M3 needed a new covering, I had the work done by the man who was overhauling it. The covering was the excellent Griptac from CameraLeather. kokoshawnuff Posted October 29, 2012 Share #3 Posted October 29, 2012 I've not felt anything that is as firm (hard plastic) as real Vulcanite. But there are a couple options from both cameraleather.com and aki asahi that look almost identical and feel close enough (though more of a leatherette feel). I like the pebbled emboss from aki, and though a slightly different look, the griptac from cameraleather.
earleygallery Posted October 29, 2012 Share #4 Posted October 29, 2012 This is such a regular question there should be a sticky thread for it! One place, CRR Luton in the UK can put a new proper vulcanite covering on your M. Otherwise you need to remove the old stuff and fit one of the self adhesive covers as suggested above. antistatic Posted October 30, 2012 Share #5 Posted October 30, 2012 +1 for Aki-Asahi leatherette. I replaced the vulcanite on my M2 except for the door which was still in good condition. The leatherette is a very close match.
Stealth3kpl Posted November 3, 2012 Share #6 Posted November 3, 2012 How about this tortoise shell covering? Pete
Timmyjoe Posted November 19, 2012 Author Share #7 Posted November 19, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I went with Aki-Asahi leatherette and am very pleased with how it turned out. Has a good feel (grippy) and looks close enough to the original vulcanite that I'm not changing the vulcanite on the back camera door.
thrid Posted November 26, 2012 Share #8 Posted November 26, 2012 +1 for Aki-Asahi leatherette. One day the vulcanite on my M2 finally gave in and just disintegrated within a week. This covering feels pretty good in hand. It's a lot less 'slick' than the old M6 covering. As has been mentioned the only place that can actually replace vulcanite with real vulcanite is CCR
wlaidlaw Posted November 26, 2012 Share #9 Posted November 26, 2012 Levant Black and Rollei Black Magic real leather, rather than Leatherette, from CameraLeather.com Custom camera leather and leatherette, are quite similar in appearance to the original vulcanite but IMHO have a much nicer feel to them and provide better grip, particularly when hands are sweaty or very cold. Below is a pic of my M8 covered in Rollei Black Magic. I have had to use a flash as the skies are black outside here today in the southern UK. This makes the leather look a little shinier than it actually is. Morgan who runs Cameraleather is not the world's most efficient business man but the kits are very reasonably priced and of lovely quality, when they do arrive. He will provide an extra square to cover a grip in matching leather if you require. Kelvin at Protech Camera Repairs, near Uckfield, UK, makes a perfect job of fitting these kits, if like me, handling sticky bits of leather is not amongst your skill sets.
