alun Posted November 1, 2012 Share #4 Posted November 1, 2012 (edited) Thanks for the pointer. What fantastic pictures. it isn't often you find a master photographer - a genuine great - you have simply never heard of, but that's the case here, at least for me it is. He is a little reminiscent of Aleksandras Macijauskas, the Lithuanian photographer who has documented Lithuanian village life - a splendid monograph was published by Thames & Hudson in 1991 (My Lithuania). johnbuckley Posted November 4, 2012 Share #6 Posted November 4, 2012 (edited) Pentti Sammallahti is a magical photographer. I have collected his work, which still is reasonably priced, through the Peter Fetterman Gallery in LA. There are a number of excellent books of his work, but just recently, "Here Far Away" was published, which has work from his entire career. I think it costs about $75.00 -- less than 10% of what the new two-volume Joel Meyerowitz collection costs :-) Sammallahti uses Hasselblads, I believe, including the X-Pan. I love the way, over time, so many of his best photographs depend on animals, particularly dogs and cats, to bring out the humor in a situation. (The image my wife and I own shows a variety of dogs surrounding, in a frozen White Sea Russian village, a dog standing on a motorcycle with chained tires and skis for wheels. Funny. Gorgeous.) If you can find it, one of his most haunting images shows just a dark scenes of woods and a distant lake. Only when you seek the title do you find it was taken in Japan at Fukushima, pre-tsunami. A great photographer. UPDATE - Oh, I see, the story linked is about Here Far Away. A book definitely worth looking at, and buying if you can.
