esquire53 Posted October 25, 2012 Share #2 Β Posted October 25, 2012 Anyone have tips on how to make images with the look and tonality of his? HEDI SLIMANE ROCK DIARY Β I didn't know her work. Looks like very well metered from start. As for the work flow, it could be Capture One and converted in Capture One to B&W Capture One can give you those smooth look but still sharp edges
Lightwrangler Posted October 25, 2012 Share #3 Β Posted October 25, 2012 I didn't know her work. Β She's a he btw. Β Mike
sanyasi Posted October 25, 2012 Share #4 Β Posted October 25, 2012 Hope you find out. Β You should first determine if he uses film or digital. Good chance film given dates. Β Why not drop an e-mail and ask. All he can do is say no.
piblondin Posted October 26, 2012 Author Share #5 Β Posted October 26, 2012 I believe he uses a Phase One 645. I'm more interested in the lighting setup and post-processing adjustments required to achieve a similar look.
Lightwrangler Posted October 26, 2012 Share #6 Β Posted October 26, 2012 (edited) Looks digital. Not sure whether those are done with a MF camera. Some are available light, some may have had some help from a softbox. Some look like studio, others like on location. Who knows but Mr Slimane himself or his PP person? Might be easier to find your own "look". Β Mike Edited October 26, 2012 by Royal_Corona
Guest WPalank Posted October 27, 2012 Share #7 Β Posted October 27, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Control of the light. some shots are all natural, some are natural that have been flagged, some are softbox or other light diffuse and again he is controlling the light with flags or using a snoot. Again, forget about the processing and learn to control and/or create light.
Paul J Posted October 27, 2012 Share #8 Β Posted October 27, 2012 It's nearly all lighting that creates Hedi's aesthetic. Β Hedi, though, has an incrediblly strong and solid point of view in his images (he is the Creative Director of fashion super brand YSL after all). That is what's most noticeable. It's easy to think it's the post processing that is creating the presence when it isn't. His aesthetic is a small part of his success.
Guest WPalank Posted October 27, 2012 Share #9 Β Posted October 27, 2012 To the OP. Thanks by the way for bringing my attention to his really nice work. As someone mentioned above (YSL), I am very familiar with his design experience, current and past, but did not know he is a photographer.
piblondin Posted October 28, 2012 Author Share #10 Β Posted October 28, 2012 To the OP. Thanks by the way for bringing my attention to his really nice work. As someone mentioned above (YSL), I am very familiar with his design experience, current and past, but did not know he is a photographer. Β His original aim was photography and then pursued fashion almost as a sidetrack. He then went back to photography full-time in between Dior and his current, new post at YSL.
Paul J Posted October 28, 2012 Share #11 Β Posted October 28, 2012 He turned to photography in-between Dior and SL because when offered his own label within Dior his asking fee was obscenely high, in the millions. Pilati's contract was due in a couple years and negotiations were always rumoured. He had some time to kill and turned his hand to photography. Something he had done all his life. Guy is a genius - He just gets style and aesthetic, it's his vocabulary. Β Somewhat controversial at the moment - Sadly his first collection was widely (and undeservedly so) panned by a posse of critics. The was a very public twitter bust up. Has more to do with past politics, the hype leading up to it and his changing of the name from YSL to Saint Lauren.
