Curious to know if the new R adapter for the M work with the M9 ?

Putting aside the problem of focusing, LV etc available in the M, will the R adapter work with the M9 ?.

I have pre-ordered my M together with the R adapter and in anticipation also bought a few longer R lens.

Technically, I believe it will also work with the M9 - although the M9 may not recognise it and it does not show in the EXIF files.

Thanks - now the questions are - the new Leica M - R Adapter has coding but will it recognize all the R lenses or how does it work ? What are the differences with the other R to M adapters out there?

It doesn’t recognize any lenses; it’s just an adapter with coding. It is the camera that recognizes the adapter (but not the lens on the adapter).

The M9 will probably not recognise the code and it probably will not have an EXIF information in its firmware.

BTW, what is the code for the adapter?

Thanks.

+1 what does the code in the adapter do anyway ? The M recognizes that it has an R lens but not the type of lens? how does it help in the image produced ?

All it needs is perhaps an update on the firmware ??

Sorry if these questions sounds silly to some but I just trying to figure "how does this dedicated R to M adapter improves on the quality of image ?" or just another marketing or sales hype.

On an M, the R adaptor brings up a new menu list of R lenses, for which there are built-in corrections in the camera firmware, just like there are for most M lenses.

This firmware improves the image.

I doubt very much whether Leica will update the M9/M-E firmware to read the R lens adaptor code nor put the R-lens adjustments in firmware, both for marketing reasons.

according to my understanding, based on a conversation at Meister Hamburg last saturday:

the M will recognize the coding on the new R to M adapter. that should lead you to a new menu item in the M which lists various R lens models (most likely those which had ROM contacts, but i haven't seen an official list yet). if you've mounted, for example, a vario-elmar 35/70 f4, select that lens from the list and the M will adjust some parameters (vignetting etc) to match that lens.

please double-check this at your local dealer, or wait for confirmation from informed sources here.

i didn't hear anything about the m9 or monochrom recognizing the code on the new R to M adapter (but i'm curious too)!

thanks

For sure. How are you going to focus?

Am I missing something here? The adapter may fit but you wouldn't be able to focus or see the field of view from a zoom lens on an M9 body.

Thank you guys. The questions will now be "Will Leica come up with a new firmware for the M9 to recognize the coding in the new Leica R to M adapter and also have FOCUS ASSIST that are found in other cheaper generic adapters ?.

I imaging, if it's possible, it would work like this:

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

1. If Leica's R2M adapter is mounted, pushing half-way the button triggers live-view mode,

which means the shutter screen will be raised (like the cleaning sensor mode),

and the live-view is on your LCD.

2. You probably can take off your finger, it will stay in the live-view,

or you may have to keep your finger half-pushed.

3. It's your time to do the focus. You are on your own to make it right.

3. Pushing full-way the button will capture the picture.

4. It then automatically close the shutter screen and back to the standby condition.

5. Depend on the serial number, your M9 may need to send to Leica to enable the live-view switching.

6. Leica also offers to upgrade your M9, with cost to be announced, to add the EVF port.

No, they will not. Definitely not.

Focus assist needs a live image from the sensor. The M9 has a CCD sensor. CCD sensors can not produce a live image.

I don't think that it is correct "CCD sensors can not produce a live image". Many cameras with live view has CCD sensors.

Yes, maybe "Focus assist needs a live image from the sensor" but technology can do wonders.
