NikonJeff Posted October 24, 2012 Share #1  Posted October 24, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I came upon a variable ND filter and was wondering if anyone had any experience with them? I think they would be convenient but not sure of their optics etc...  Here's one of them:  Amazon.com: Polaroid Optics 46mm HD Multi-Coated Variable Range (ND3, ND6, ND9, ND16, ND32, ND400) Neutral Density (ND) Fader Filter - 6 Filters in 1!: Camera & Photo  Thanks! Jeff  I use one on a 50mm Summilux. It is great for outdoors at wide open. It seems to be more than acceptable quality. It has a series of graduated marks on the outside edge to help with re-setting to a desired point. It saves a little time fiddling with a bunch of ND filters of different densities. NikonJeff Posted October 26, 2012 Author Share #3 Â Posted October 26, 2012 Well I walked around Photo Plus Expo in NYC yesterday ad looked at several variable ND options and have come to the conclusion that none of them would work without removing the hood on my 35 Lux ASPH. Â I stopped at Adorama and purchased a B&W 2 stop ND filter for $46 that will work with the hood installed. By the way, that was my first visit to the actual store and it was amazing - felt like a real camera store. i was able to walk behind a counter and touch things, look at anything I wanted and the people (all of them that I met) were unbelievably friendly. GREAT experience!

Jeff  I own this filter, 52mm screw for my Fuji's XF lenses, and i can say that it is a bargain especially if you compare it with two o three B+W ND filters that are expansive and bulky.... In the field I noticed that maybe the ND power is less than claimed, because toward the "max" position the filter (that is built with 2 crossed polarizing filters) show an "X" pattern in the viewfinder (and in the picture too obviously)...... About the optical quality, I noticed just slightly less contrast and some more warmer tone in the image taken with the filter.
