Praha hlavní nádraží is the largest and most important railway station in the Czech Republic. It was originally opened in 1871 and named Franz Josef Station after Franz Joseph I of Austria. In 2010 the station served 132,560 trains and 22 million passengers. The Art Nouveau station was built between 1901 and 1909 and was designed by the Czech architect, Josef Fanta. The station was extended by a new terminal building which was built between 1972 and 1979. In 2011 the station was refurbished by the Italian company Grandi Stazioni.
