Which lenses to keep with M9P?

My Leica M9P arrived a few weeks ago, (I finally upgraded from my M8) I took the plunge the day the Leica $1000 rebate was announced. The 50 MM Summilux arrived today.

My current lens line up is as follows...

15mm Vogt 4.5

18mm Zeiss 4

28mm Leica ASPH 2.8

35mm Leica ASPH 2.0

50mm Leica Summilux 1.4

50mm Leica Noctilux 1.0

50mm Leica Summicron 2.0 (older version)

75mm Leica Summicron 2.0

I'm trying to trim down my lens kit (as well as raise some $$$ to pay for the M9P / 50 Summilux when the credit card bill comes next month.

Can anyone offer some suggestions as to what lenses I should keep?

What do you think I can give up?

My initial thoughts were to keep the 35 Cron - 50 Lux - 75 Cron and sell the rest but am I staying too close together in focal ranges?

Any suggested would be greatly appreciated.....

Suggest you work out how much all these lenses have been used in the past and rationalise accordingly. I am assuming previous use of Leica digital cameras will provide you with this information for every photograph taken. Why not work on keepers to start with.

Keep them all!

You can guarantee that no matter which lens(es) you sell you will have regrets within days or weeks, and then you will spend even more to buy it/them back again.

that is unless looking back over your photographs you find that there are lenses that you never use - and even...

None of us can advise how you should rationalise as only you know what you photograph and what lenses you use.

Perhaps the 2.0/50 Summicron could go as you have the other two 50's. That, plus the rebate will give you >$2000.

Whatever you do, don't sell the Noctilux. I have both the 1.0/50 E60 v3, and the current 1.4/50 ASPH FLE. They are both sensational, but very different, lenses.

I will have to see your question through my preferences (of course) and on that basis I would advise against selling the 28/2, 35/2, 50/1 and 75/2 and the 15 and/or 18 depending on preferences. Here are my reasons.

I don't use wide angles so 15 and 18 go on that basis. Since you don't mention them as keepers, perhaps you feel the same, otherwise consider keeping the one you prefer.

28 and 35 are quite different focal lengths which, imo, merits keeping both.

You have too many 50s (don't we all? :D ) but I would keep the 50/1 because of its very special character (and it may even be an investment given how prices seem to rise). The 50 Asph is, in one word, unbelievable. I have it as well as the 50 pre-asph and while I have not felt the need yet to sell the pre-asph, if I had to choose, that's the one that I would sell.

I don't see the need for the 50/2 due to the (amazing) qualities of the 50 Asph.

Selling the 15 and/or 18, the 50/2 and the 50 pre-asph will offset your credit bill nicely while maintaining a good selection of focal lengths.

Good luck

Philip

I agree that only your own pattern of lens use can tell what lenses you should priorize. That is, if you are the kind of photog that knows why he takes a picture, and with what lenses. Otherwise, I would say that your prognosis is bad …

I know why I use a particular lens, which is fortunate as I have (obviously) less money to spend. My present active lineup is the following:

F/4 Distagon 18mm

F/3.4 Super-Elmar 21mm ASPH

F/1.4 Summilux 35mm v.2 ASPH

F/1.4 Summilux 50mm ASPH

F/2.8 Elmarit-M 90mm

F/3.4 Apo-Telyt 135mm

The two Summiluxes are seemingly close to each other, but they are very different focal lengths, and lenses. I have even travelled with both in my bag, and used both of them – exclusively! The 35mm mostly indoors, and the 50mm outside.

It might be worth seeing (if you code them) how many shits you have done with each and also which ones are your best.

I could say what I would keep but not much help I suspect

:D

as yo sure it's a typo, or is this a new way of assessing lens usage!

15mm Vogt 4.5

18mm Zeiss 4

28mm Leica ASPH 2.8

35mm Leica ASPH 2.0

50mm Leica Summilux 1.4

50mm Leica Noctilux 1.0

50mm Leica Summicron 2.0 (older version)

75mm Leica Summicron 2.0

We're it me, I'd sell the 15 & 18 and the 50 Summicron.

Long term, I'd then look at getting a 21 SEM.

Excellent suggestion.

Except that although you and I are big 21mm fans, if he likes using 15 & 18mm then he may be better rationalising to the 3.8/18 SEM (or just keeping the 18mm ZM) athough this is a big jump to his next lens of 28mm.

Having moved from an M8 to an M9-P I have found very wide lenses get much less use since they were not so wide when used on the M8. I have also found the rendering sometimes strangely a little different. (I prefer the rendering of my 21 Elmarit ASPH to the 24 Elmarit ASPH on my M8, on my M9 it's the other way around. So probably silly to rush.

In your case with so many 50's in your M8 line up you will need to hang on to your 75 I suspect. I agree with the wide comments and moving to one. Personally I would pick 24mm, most I suspect would choose 21. As I have both 21 and 24 for me my 24mm is perforable and notably different to my 28.

I would personally keep your Noctilux if you can, buy back in 2 years time and you'll wish you kept it I suspect. I'd sell the 50 1.4 Summilux, but again that's me wanting to keep the Noctilux. Personally I am not a huge fan of the 35 ASPH, so I would look at other 35's as alternatives

If it were me I'd go

21 or 24

28

35 Summilux ASPH or FLE

50 Summicron and Noctilux

75

You might want to try a 90mm and sell the 75. I certainly 'need' less lenses than I own, so I would also ask the question what is right for you and what will you appreciate and value.

Keep all your lenses for at least 12 months after you purchase the M9-P. At that point, you will most certainly know which lenses you have not used.

My gut feel is that you will.

  • 15mm Vogt 4.5 (sell)
  • 18mm Zeiss 4 (sell)
  • Buy a 21 Super-Elmar
  • 28mm Leica ASPH 2.8 (keep)
  • 35mm Leica ASPH 2.0 (keep and or replace with a 28 Summicron replacing the 28 Elmarit as well)
  • 50mm Leica Summilux 1.4 (keep)
  • 50mm Leica Noctilux 1.0 (sell or replace with a 50AA)
  • 50mm Leica Summicron 2.0 (older version) (sell)
  • 75mm Leica Summicron 2.0 (keep)

That's rather funny given what the last three letters of your nickname mean in some of the Scandinavian languages (no offence intended!).

Apologies to any Scandinavian members, I had no idea! If anyone knows if you can change a nickname could you pm me please (don't want to hyjack the thread)

in my opinion leica means small... I'd go for a 2-3 lens kit and the noctilux as a collector's item...

28 elmarit

50 summilux

either CV 15 or 75 cron.. whatever you prefer... my ideal would be a 15 or 18/21 in addition... you get to think more about taking photos rather than equipment then ;)

JT,

Too easy.

Keep 35mm f2 Asph, 50mm f1.4 Asph (if this is what you have just added).

If it is the pre-asph then either swap for 50 f1.4 asph or perhaps the newer summicron (extendible hood) non-Apo-asph. Or go for the 50 f2.5 summarit which is a compact light lens and f2.5 50mm still gives shallow DOF and the high iso on M9 means you can use ISO320 and f2.5 to catch the same amount of light as ISO160 and f1.4.

Possibly keep one of the wide angles 18mm for those very odd times you need one and it will save you spending a few grand on a Leica version. I have a 25mm f4 Voigtlander on screw thread with adapter £150 and this saves me spending £2000 on Leica 24mm f2.8 asph. I'm not saying they are the same quality but my wide angle need is suppressed enough to spend money on the lenses I do use.

Regards, Lincoln
