I heard Panasonic LX-2 will coming soon. The DMC-LX2 increases the pixel count to 10.2 million and adds a larger widescreen 2.8-inch LCD. Despite the increase in resolution Panasonic claims that noise has been significantly reduced (compared to the LX1), also other new features include sensitivity up to ISO 3200 (though not at full resolution), Intelligent ISO Control (a mode that increases ISO if the camera detects subject motion) and a refined control interface.

How about -Leica D-Lux 2?? New Model D-Lux 3 coming soon???

If it is true, Leica will kill so many fanatic.

I don't believe it for one minute. Not without increasing the sensor size and they didn't do that because their using the same (wonderful) Leica zoom lens. Maybe they improved the in camera processing algorithm which can help a little. But 10.2 MP is a millstone around their neck that will be difficult to get free of.

I hope the marketing people will stop designing cameras.

Dear friends of D-Lux 2,

here is a Leica-answer on D-Lux 3: From the e-mails below you see that it is announced to come this fall.

Florian Scholz

**********************************************************************************

Sehr geehrter Herr Prof. Scholz,

Betreff: Leica D-Lux 2, firmware update

Florian Scholz

The common misperception is that sensor size is the be-all-end-all when it comes to image noise. It is not the sole factor. Another misperception is that heavy handed image processing is need to combat image noise in small sensors thus resulting in loss of detail. This is not necessarily true either. Additionally, I do not believe that the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 nor the forthcoming Leica D-Lux 3 is the sole product of any marketing department.

One major factor that contributes to noise, besides sensor size, is the amount of electrical current used. Reduce the demands and resulting noise will reduce as well. This is exactly what the Venus Engine III LSI, offered in most of the new Panasonic cameras, does.

There are many other areas for future improvement that will affect image noise and none of them have to do with sensor size. The problem will be one of psychological perception over actual applied use as any technological advances will also move larger sensors ahead as well. If tomorrows technology yields today’s results of large sensors on small sensor will small sensor still be frowned upon because the results from larger sensor are equally better as well?

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 is a very fitting successor to the LX1 from a end-user stand point. Better interface controls, larger LCD, faster processing, SDHC compatible, and lower battery consumption. These improvements alone are substantial even if noise control was not reportedly improved upon.
