Jon Pop Posted August 2, 2012 Share #1 Posted August 2, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Quick question...I have a new 28mm Elmarit f2.8 asph lens (6 bit) and wanted to get a replacement hood for it..I'd like to use the 12504 thin round hood that fits the 35mm cron...since the new cron and the Elmarit both share the same plastic square hood, I was hoping I could use the metal 12504 hood. Thoughts?
Advertisement Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 Hi Jon Pop, Take a look here Elmarit 28mm asph lens hood. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
HeinzX Posted August 2, 2012 Share #2 Posted August 2, 2012 Using a lens hood designed for a longer focal length on a shorter one could result in vignetting. I would not recommend to do that.
Jon Pop Posted August 2, 2012 Author Share #3 Posted August 2, 2012 I would agree...except Leica supplies the current square hood for both the 28 f2.8 and the 35mm f2....it's the same hood, same part number. Both of these lenses share the exact same hood. Which led me to think the same round hood would also work?
menos I M6 Posted August 2, 2012 Share #4 Posted August 2, 2012 The 12504 should be safe to use on the 28mm. Both this lens hood and the square plastic hood, delivered with the 35 Summicron ASPH and 28 Elmarit ASPH are designed by Leica for 28mm AND 35mm lenses. Personally, I would prefer the rectangular plastic hood, as it: - is more effective to shade the lens - has a better fit - let's you also cap the lens hood, when transporting in a bag during travels - takes a beating better, being soft plastic
Moggele Posted August 2, 2012 Share #5 Posted August 2, 2012 12504 shouldn´t be a problem on 28 asph because it´s wider than the original rectangular hood but I agree with menos that it´s less effective. And: 12504 are quite more expensive!
wda Posted August 2, 2012 Share #6 Posted August 2, 2012 Jon, what do you find unsatisfactory about the recommended lens hood? Apart from the ease with which one can lose/misplace the lens hood cap, I find the hood ideal.
lct Posted August 2, 2012 Share #7 Posted August 2, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) The round metal hood # 12504 was shipped in silver version with the M8.2 Safari. Its diameter has the same length as the diagonal of the square plastic hood # 12526 but is less efficient and protective by far. The 12504 cannot be used as a grip to mount or unmount the lens though which is a good thing for the latter. Welcome, dear visitor! Jon Pop Posted August 2, 2012 Author Share #9 Posted August 2, 2012 Thanks everyone for the helpful advice (and the great pic of how to saw a hole in my existing hood). My rationale for asking was simply that I currently have a Zeiss Biogon C 35mm f2.8 which has a round metal hood and I quite like it in terms of appearance and function - but I'm in no way dissatisfied with the stock square hood. The 28mm Elmarit ASPH is so tiny even with the supplied stock hood that I don't have any composition problems. It was more just the usual daydreaming about odds and ends. I know that if I ever switch from the Elmarit 28 to the Summicron (which is E46) I would definitely invest in the sexy yet expensive #12466 round metal hood simply because the plastic hood that comes with the 28mm Summicron ASPH is a giant, ugly monstrosity, even with its supplied cutout. It looks like the end of a vaccuum cleaner on the end of a lens, and practically doubles the length of the lens and I prefer compactness along with protection and assistance with stray light. But that's just my own opinion.
