I suppose this is probably the right place for this? If not - move it!

What I can't find - and maybe it doesn't exist or is not possible (Thanks, Apple) - is a simple Asset Management tool for iPad photos. I find it annoying that they are imported in what seems to me a random order and I don't seem to able to move them into the corect order.

Am I missing something, or can anyone point me to an App for this?

Many thanks.

Obviously not!

I did find one that goes some way towards it in that it allows sorting by various headings e.g. Date, size etc. (PhotoMgrPro if you are interested). But still does not allow what one might call random sort for a slideshow.

Nope.

Hunted high and low.

Plenty pretty basic and useless JPG manipulation progs.

Nil for display and nil usable for viewing DNG's

Every few months I have a hunt more in hope than expectation......

The iPad file system and lack of processing power make it just a very basic Photo Slideshow viewer at best.....

Having said all that it is very useful that you can take pictures OF the iPad..... I used to use my iPad as en electronic OS map when walking ..... now I set up the route and take a photos of it with my 90/4 and view the maps on my M9 instead .... iPad gets left at home :)

PhotoRaw will handle DNGs. It doesn't have slideshow or sorting capabilities however.

I´ve tried PhotoRaw on the ipad3 (DNGs already copied via camera connection kit) and it always crashed the moment it started scanning :-(

Well, if you don't contact support (aka me!) about it, whatever the problem is will never get fixed.......:D

....and no, there is no known problem that could cause that.

I think I've found another possibility. If it does what it says on the tin, then Sort My Photos may well be the solution as it allows manual sort. More later after I've tried it out.

Well it seems to work ok, but of course only within itself as far as I can see. Still it does mean one can select the photo order that one wants.

On a thread with a similar topic it was mentioned that DNG software for the iPad was very slow at best, like 10 minutes per image if I recall correctly.

Not nearly that bad :) - an M8 image will import in plus/minus 16 seconds on a iPad 2 using the latest version of PhotoRaw, depending on what else is running at the time.

But try for yourself - PhotoRaw Lite is free, and supports all the cameras that the full version supports.

Maybe I don't understand the question correctly. If you want to change the order of photos ON the iPad, a little trickier but I think there are some Portfolio Apps (for less than $12 US or so) that can do this.

I don't understand why many of the replies in this thread are talking about DNGs when I don't see this being brought up in the OPs original query.

Now to sort photos and then get them to your iPad from your Mac IN A SPECIFIC ORDER is relatively simple. I use Lightroom and Create a "New Collection" by simply hitting the + sign, giving it a name and hitting Return. I then simply drag images from the Library in LR into the new collection (DNGs, TIFFs, whatever). When I have all the images dragged into this mini Portfolio (for lack of a better term), while in the Collection I hit command-A (which selects all the images) and hit "Export". In the Export Panel I have created a Pre-set for my iPad which exports all the images to A Folder on my Desktop (which I can then give a name) at a specific size, resolution (72 PPI), Jpeg, Standard Sharpening and at Best Quality.

Once the Folder is created, I then manage the order of the images by renaming the jpegs, 1_Name.jpeg, 2_Name.jpeg and so on.

I import the new folder into my Pictures folder (on the Mac), connect my iPad and through iTunes Sync the Pictures Folder.

The new mini Portfolio will appear in the Photos Camera Roll with the name of the Folder I gave it on my Mac, on my iPad.

Again, once on the iPad and in the Photos App, you cannot move or even delete the images. Why???? I have no idea, but it would be a great function to have.

If at a later date you want to change the order or delete images, go to the Pictures Folder on the Mac, find the Folder of images, delete or reorganize the images via the system I outlined above, resync to the iPad where it will ask you if you want to Replace the Folder (YES!) and you're done. Not the simplest or most elegant system but it works.

Thanks for that William.

As you say a little complicated. And yes I was only referring to jpegs.

I have however found a portfolio app Foliobook. This allows one to set up effectively a series of nested folders/galleries aka ones website and within each folder one can sort photos . Job done!

Thanks to all that took the trouble to respond.

Yes Foliobook is actually quite a good App. Needs a little more work to make it a "killer" but IMO it's about the best out there.

PhotoManagerPro is not bad, but IIRC it does not permit one to sort into an order of your own choosing.
